Parts prices and availability

I just finished a parts order for a full restoration of a 70's receiver putting out a whopping 38 watts per channel. Total cost is $120 at mouser. List includes 1 relay, about 70 caps (Nichicon/WIMA), about a dozen transistors, and a few diodes. In recent past, this type of order would have been about half of the price. On top of the cost, mouser is also out of many common parts, with expected delivery up to a year out. What gives?

I've always been of the opinion that If I sell something, it is fully restored. I guess I am going to change that perspective now.

I can see covid impacting price a little, but what's up with the inventory? Did people really buy caps by the thousands like they did with toilet paper? They are out of almost every value UPW caps. They typically had tens of thousands in stock. Covid has really reinforced my contempt for humanity haha.

It's not as much demand, as supply.

If you've read much news there have been production shutdowns affectng everything from new cars to laptops, there's a microchip shortage. Other components are also affected and those of us in the production environment are now trying to keep our production lead-times down by buying enough stock to produce (if the lead time is for example 6 months, we need to have a minimum of 6 months inventory and inbound to cover it or produciton will stop).

The suppliers, mainly in the far-east, have been having trouble keeping production moving with the Covid-based sick workers and even their suppliers (mining, etc. (raw materials)) are slow.

Unfortunate, but at least you're not waiting for a heart defibrilator.
