PayPal Question

Purchased an item from a guy on AudiogoN and he said no PP fees if I paid by bank withdrawl instead of credit/debit card. I said no problem, that's how my PP account has always been set up.

Now, I get this email from him asking if I paid by credit/debit because fees were deducted on his end.

I have confirmed the payment was sent from my bank account, not credit/debit card.

So, now I'm researching this and PP seems to be saying that if I click options on the "Purchase" tab, fees are applied against the receiver/seller. But, if I use the options on the "Personal" tab, no fees are put against the receiver if using a bank account for the transfer.

Tell me I didn't just cost myself $43 (amount seller says PP deducted) by clicking just one tiny button on the Purchase tab instead of one tiny button on the Personal tab. :tears:

I'd contact Paypal and pitch a fit. They can adjust the charge if you, like me spend a lot through them and threaten to cancel your account.

The seller can give you a refund of the payment (Its an option on his side), and you can resend it the way that has no charge. Probably the easiest way to do it.

The issue here is that before Paypal was owned by Ebay, if one sent money directly from a checking account then Paypal did not charge the receiver any transaction fee... Move forward a couple years and Paypal now sucks a service fee off of every transaction. Like it or not someone has to pay the transaction fee of about 3%.

Clearly I don't know as much about PP as I thought I did.

But, I'm learning quickly for almost $50. In their fees schedule it does still say no transaction fees on either party for "personal transfers to friends or family" that are funded by PP balance or bank transfer. I am set up for bank transfer.

The big problem is that the item is due to arrive tomorrow, so asking the other party to refund at this point (do the math based on $43 fees) is asking for a lot of trust. Of course, I'm 100% good for it but he doesn't know that. All I can do is ask and hope he'll work with me. I guess I wouldn't be too shocked if he said no way Jose.

I've fallen into several traps with PayPal. I'd just simplify the problem by having the payment refunded (and that should credit the fees back as well), and then send the seller a money order. PayPal is a bank, just like the rest of them, and is in just as much trouble. Therefore, they'll try every borderline-legal means to get fees out of us.

My paypal account deducts a percentage (calculated by fuzzy math that not even a Wall Street guru with a Masters degree in accountancy can figure out), for each payment I receive. And that's regardless of the buyer's method of payment (credit card, bank transfer, etc).

The seller seems somewhat unwilling, although hasn't said "no", to the refund and repayment scenario.

I called PayPal to ask for reversal of the fees and was told the receiving party has to make that request because the fee was deducted on his end, not mine.

I don't want to get a bad rap as a "difficult" buyer but, OTOH, nearly $50 buys me some nice beer and a steak to grill.

As the world turns... :sigh:

Using your bank account instead of a credit card leaves you at the mercy of PayPal to resolve issues, instead of being able to dispute the charges via your CC. Leaves you a little more exposed in that way.

Just an FYI.

Yeah, and dealing with PP can be a mess. I never got back the money I spent on a Nak deck that arrived 'pre-damaged'. CYA!

Paypal now suspends your account in the cases of CC charge backs initiated by the buyer, until you repay them. I am currently in that situation. Paypal, UPS and the seller did nothing to help me.
