paypal scam

In two days I got two payments of $200 each from random people that then sent emails saying the payments were sent in error and want me to refund them. I'm not touching the payments and certainly not sending them any money as a refund. My guess is they sent the payment with a stolen card and then changed the card for me to 'refund' to.

Paypal doesn't give me the option to refuse the payments and it won't allow me to report an issue with them through that system.

Anyone else gotten this one?

mmmmh...cheese

...definitely ignore it

The problem is there is currently $400 sitting in my paypal account. I'm assuming at some point there will be some sort of chargeback. I haven't 'claimed' the money yet and won't.

I managed to send a message to paypal telling them they need to reverse it and that I'm not touching the money in any way but I'm guessing nobody there will comprehend it. The comments in their help section just tell people to refund the money.

hmmm, now that you mention it I believe I've seen notices claiming such but I've always just ignored them:dunno:

I was about to and then found the money in my account. Paypal actually got back to me and reversed both transactions. I closed the account, I don't need more headaches, I don't really need 90% of the stuff I've bought with using the account, and I've given up on selling on ebay so why bother with it.

If you receive an "unsolicited" item in the mail, you are under no obligation whatsoever to pay for it or return it.

I believe that is federal law.

I wonder if that applies to transfer of funds.

Someone at work said to give it a few months and see if the money disappeared. I guess if it was a stolen credit card and the person didn't notice or fight it properly then it would stay.

The first thing to do is change your password to something both radically different and very strong.

Some time ago I upgraded to two factor login on there but decided this time the best way was to just close the account completely.

I like two factor logins. I started using it on Amazon after reading about a guy that got his account hacked and they used it to sell tens of thousands of dollars in stuff. He ended up getting a letter from the IRS saying he owed a lot of taxes on that stuff.

I wish I could cut the cord. MP forced off pp so that is a start.

i once accidently sent 200$ to the wrong person on paypal, i spelled his first name wrong , Brian instead of Bryan, it went through and was unable to get it back because i sent it friends and family, ended up costing me me double for the flywheel i was buying
