Philips speakers: rare to very rare pair SP-25

Hey folks!

Just put my hands yesterday on a very nice little pair of Philips speakers. Got them for more than a reasonable price, almost a giveaway and before buying them, I look on the net for at least 2 days or so and haven't found anything, any specs, not even a word about these little mint SP-25. But I found similar Vintage Philips speakers like the 22HR something etc...

I've attached here some pics of these rare to me here. And I hope that someone who's familiar with Philips vintage speakers can chime in and give some inputs and so forth, general feedbacks etc..

One thing for sure, I connected them yesterday and I must say that they sound beautiful, the tweeters especially are amazing. The main Woofer sound is beautiful but sometimes depend on the genre of music, you might not really feel the presence of the bass. On Jazz with some upright bass trio etc.. or nice lush orchestra, they sound beautiful but on Old Rock songs not at all, you miss all the bottom but new genre EDM etc... works great as mixes nowadays are focus on low end/kick etc... The image is nice too. You have to also place them well from what I could hear on my very quick test in order to enjoy them. But they sound good.

Voila, i'm very curious to hear some feedbacks of people who have owned Philips speakers of that era.

Cheers ;-)

Those look like fun. I have various Philips drivers around here but no actual Philips speakers. I wonder what the crossover looks like.

I'd have to find time to open them and find out. Or I'll send them to one my speaker engineer guy and he can have fun opening them and find out whats cooking inside.

Not too impressed once I heard other makes:)
Absolutely agree and I won't say that they sound overall AMAZING... no no no, they sound good, I have them connected since yesterday and been playing all night up to now and I'm enjoying them and not tired of them yet hahaaha ;-) So its a good sign. Of course it's not Energy's or Mission or Wharfedale nor Celestion etc..etc.. but when I saw them, My curiosity went mostly for the fact that I heard that Philips do develop very nice speakers components especially tweeters and so on so I decided to give them a try, curiosity first. And I must say that thankfully for the seller, they are honestly in mint condition, everything woofer not even a scratch in the wood etc...

Made in Canada it say's on the back. There was a series called Spectron SP-XX.Do a search for Spectron SP-30,SP-39,SP-40,SP-50.

Thanks a lot mate for pointing at me in what seems to be the right series line. I found some Spectron and even though these where made in Canada, it seems that from what I could find, this line were not cheap versions of Philips. Like this one posted here that back in the days wold cost 800$ the pair: https://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/162251-philips_spectron_sp40_speakers_/

And what I could see quickly is that the SP line from the 30's and up seem to have that almost same design type but not the SP-25 I have. The ones I have, look more like the Philips RH series.

One thing for sure, Philips have developed from the searches i've been doing lately and I'm not yet ready to rest until I find out more. And also I stumbled into amazing vintage Philips reading that shows some amazing speakers towers that they're developed from Europe not made in Canada like the Philips FB1000 (from 1990), check out this link: http://www.1001hifi.com/loudspeaker.html and scroll down a little

Either way, I want to also mention that since now 2 days i'm listening to my SP-25 and honestly, i'm not floored in terms of sound but I can say that I'm really loving their sound. I'm wondering also if these were developed in the time where Mr Paul Barton also used the Philips Tweeter to create the PSB Passive II speakers. Do a search about them and take a look

Thanks again for any info you guys might find and wish to share. Meanwhile i'm gonna continue enjoying these babies especially that while searching about the Spectron Line I heard that this line was Philips series to get in the High-End market, than I'm happy I didn't let this pair pass me by because they sound very nice and soon i'll send them to my friend speaker tech so he can open them and check whats inside.

Much appreciated ;-)
