Phono Pre Amp Help for Technics Turntable

Looking to purchase phono pre amp for Technics TT. Considering the Cambridge CP1 or CP2 units. I understand the CP1 is specifically for moving magnet cartridges and CP2 for moving coil and moving magnet cartridges. Does the Technics 1700mk2 except both types of cartridges? Are most cartridges recommended for the 1700 mk2 moving magnet type cartridges?
Also, I have an older Yamaha receiver as well, would i need to use the Yamaha receiver regardless if i purchased a phono pre amp or could i use the TT with just the phono pre amp connected to speakers.

If your Yamaha receiver has a phono input (and you use of the word "older" indicates that it should), I'd just use it. What model receiver do you have?

As to the need for a receiver if you bought a phono stage, you could hook up the phono stage's output to self-powered speakers and not need the receiver at all--one of the speakers in the pair has an amplifier built-in, output to hook up speaker wire to the other speaker, and a volume control on the front. Do you have speakers already, or are you shopping for those, too?
 
Both MC and MM cartridges will work fine with the Technics SL-1700 mk 2. I would try the receiver before buying a phono preamp; it might sound fine.
 
The receiver I will be using is an older model Yamaha RX V463 which does not have a built in turntable/phono pre amp. So will need to get a phono pre amp. Also researching speakers as well, budget for speakers under $500.00. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I would recommend you to check out Music Direct and check their list. They have a great selection from Elac and Wharfdale. Two well respected companies who offer one of the best performance:price ratio. If you could add just a little more, I would recommend the Focal 705. You will be amazed how these will sound in your system.

One reason I recommend Music Direct is they offer a 60 day home trial offer. If you're not happy, you can exchange them for another pair. I have dealt with them on several occasions and they are good to deal with. They ship FedEx ground to your home. Depending on where you live, the package could arrive in two days. If you order on Friday, you should receive your package Tuesday or Wednesday.

Another member also recommended the Focal 905 which music direct has on sale for $599. Might consider purchasing a Yamaha receiver A-S301 or S501. Do not need allot of wattage for samll living area where system will be set up in. Maybe the older Yamaha RX V463 I have along with a Phono Pre amp will do just fine as well.
 
It depends on just how small your listening room is. Ours is 11 or 12ft x 14ft long, and the Focals have been ideal. As for watts, my McIntosh MA6200 is 75 WPC and my Jolida JD-202BRC is 40 WPC. My Focals sound exquisite with either integrated amplifier.

The Focal 706 will be ideal for your room. Focal recommends a room size of 215ft² whereas your room is 480sqft. Get them home for 60 days and try them in your system. This will be the only way you will know how they sound.
