Picked up a pair of sad looking speakers for cheap...opinions ?

Hey all, I'm a soft touch for speakers that look like they need some TLC so when a pair of Onkyo S-22 three-way air-suspension popped up on my auction site, I hit buy now. They were cheap - under $20 USD - so I thought 'why not?'.

Going to pick them up next week, here's a picture. Anyone know much about these ? I know they're not Altecs or JBLs but they look kinda cool :-)

I'll probably team them up with my Mordaunt-Short sub and see how they sound.

Looking forward to checking these out. First job will be a deoxit of the tone sliders and check the LED power meters. Never had speakers with power meters so they'd better work !

Welcome to Onkyo speaker ownership. I hope it is as good for you as it has been for me.
Interesting that they're air suspension, a lot of their 80's designs are ported.

I'm back, having finally picked the speakers up. I had to sit on the beach eating my lunch, waiting for the seller to get home. Oh, the inconvenience of it all :-) Here's some shots, haven't hooked them up yet.

Cosmetically, I've had worse ! They're quite scratched up on the bottoms, tops are peeling / have some bashes and one mid dome is pushed. Covers are intact but dirty with a few snags from what looks like cat claws.....usual story !!

We expect a full sonic report!
They look like they have some weight to them, the bottoms are all scratched up indication they were slid across floors instead of lifted. The mid dust cap can probably be pulled out with either the toilet paper tube & sucking method, or using tape stuck on it and pulled to lift it. You have the grills too?

Hi Glenn, weight is fairly standard for an enclosure of this kind - they're no heavyweights but not paper thin either. I'm probably more used to lugging around bass reflex models which, I think, tend to be bulkier than air suspension jobs. I had good success with a piece of sticky tape on the end of a finger for pulling out the domes of my JVC-SK1000's so I'll give that a try with these.

Sonic report to follow, after I make some space for them :-)

Got them running at a moderate level, sound pretty good. I'm helping them along with a sub at the moment so I'll try them full range soon. Level controls work (surprisingly) but power level meters are out on both sides (unless I'm not driving them hard enough lol).

If the power meters are similar to the ADS 910 LED power meters, than the are measuring power off the woofer, and need some juice to light them up.

Have you opened them up to look at the crossover? I bet there's some dried up electrolytics just begging to be swapped for some nice 5% Daytons (cheaper than the 1%, and spec out at 2 to 3%).

You SHOULD hear quite an improvement in the highs.

And because I'm not running them full range, presumably that's why they aren't lighting up :-)

Now running full range and I like them :-) And they light up !

They sound very nice, not massively 'bassey' but clean, clear and detailed. To get the lights to come on, I have to crank them harder than I can comfortably listen too lol.
