Pickering V15 Micro IV stylus help

Just obtained this cart without stylus and would appreciate some replacement suggestions. I've read some threads and it looks like one could substitute Stanton styli, but I'm not sure. The cart will be used mostly on a Garrard Lab 80 table, so looking for something that can track at least 1.5-2g, and heavier is ok.

Looking for the best replacement out there and I'll consider cost later.

Thanks!

Have you looked on VinylEngine? They list 6 different styli for this cart. I'm looking also for my Type A.
Also try LPGear, they carry them but it's rather difficult to tell because they don't go into a lot of details on compliance and/or tracking weight.
Right now I'm looking on LPGear at the ATE for an elliptical or more than likely the AM conical for the Garrard.
VinylEngine does give tracking weight details on these it's just that LPGear doesn't.

The best replacements are the original ones wich can be bought at pickering uk website (no affiliation,i own a pickering myself so i know).
Currently there are 4 different stylus for your particular type of cartridge.
I can't supply a link as i think it's forbidden so google it.

You can use Stanton 600 stylii, but not 680/681 stylii. XV-15 stylii may also work.

The XV-15 styli do work though, given the difference in inductance between the two cartridges, the voicing isn't what Pickering intended (Micro IV @ 550mH vs. XV-15 @ 930mH).

Probably the best stylus, rare and expensive when found, is the Pickering D IV AME (Pfanstiehl 607-DEM), a .2 x .7 mil elliptical that tracks from 1.0 to 2.0g.

Probably second best is the Stanton D600EE (Pfanstiehl 821-DEE), a .3 x .7 mil that also tracks from 1.0 to 2.0g. Turntableneedles has those.

As with other Stantering cartridge, my personal recommendation is to avoid generics.

Pickering UK is out of stock on the D-IV-AME (I'd say permanently). They do have the D-IV-ATE, a .3 x .7 mil conical that tracks from 2.0 to 4.0g and several conicals. Given those options, I'd go for the Stanton at TTN.

Try Turntable Needles.

They have the Stanton I mentioned but no NOS Pickerings except for the D-IV-ATE for about $72.00 plus shipping. Pickering UK has the D-IV-AM, alight tracking conical for $30.00 shipped. I might be tempted to get that.

Could you link me to the ones that you say TN's have, because I'm not finding them, or they're waiting list. Thanks for the help and info.

Oh, crap! Senior moment! The D600EE is indeed a "waiting list" which translates as "gone forever". I coulda sworn they had them.

They still have the D600E. That may be the best option. I'd want to know more about that JICO "D4ACE". The Pickering D-IV-ACE is a heavy tracker so the JICO might be as well. In any event Pickering UK has originals for 39 clams delivered, whereas the JICO costs 56 plus shipping. Also, though the number resembles the Pickering number for the V-15 Micro, their listing says it's for the V-15. The V-15 Micro is a moving iron cartridge while the V-15 is moving magnet. I think it's for the Micro but you never know. JICO listings for Pickering have been a bit of a muddle.

Pickering V15 is the model of the Stanton 500 line. The V15 stylus is compatible on line 500 Stanton, equally with the 500 stylus to V15.

What I might recommend is the following stylus:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PICKERING-V...T-NO-BRUSH-FOR-KLH-GARRARD-DUAL-/380914577602

Recommended tracking force between 1.5 and 3 Grs

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PICKERING-V15-AT3-TYPE-STYLUS-REPLACEMENT-WITH-BRUSH-/351101300920

Recommended follow-up force between 2 and 5 g.

Moreover, the V15 is a very good and recommended cartridge.

I hope I have been of some help, cheers.

Sorry but the Pickering Phase IV Micro, which the OP has, is the sister cartridge of the Stanton 600. MI not MM.

I'm certainly no Pickering expert but VinlyEngine lists the Pickering V-15 Micro IV,which the OP has as a moving magnet.
Now just to confuse matters a little, I was under the impression that if a Pickering had an "X" designation, it was a moving iron.

What I have is Pickering V15 Micro IV. I'm going to check with Jico regarding their D-IV-Ace4, and V15Phase4 styli. I've good luck with their styli in the past for Shure and Elac and their prices are reasonable.

They're mistaken. The V-15 Micro IV and V-15 Phase IV, as well as the Stanton 600, are all "flux valve", or moving iron, cartridges.

Now just to confuse matters a little, I was under the impression that if a Pickering had an "X" designation, it was a moving iron.

The "X" cartridge, the XV-15, is indeed moving iron but, as far as I know, Pickering didn't mean for the "X" to signify moving iron, especially since, the Micro IV and Phase IV are moving iron as well. Interestingly though, only the Stanton cartridges that begin with the number 6 are moving iron. All others are moving magnet.

Be aware that the stylus they list as V15PHASEIV is a conical. The other, listed as a D4ACE, is an elliptical but in neither case is the recommended VTF listed. In the case of the "D4ACE" the "C" means "changer" and indicates a stylus meant to track between 3.0 and 5.0 grams.

If that's what JICO is selling, and if that's what you want, Pickering UK sells that stylus (NOS) for $39.00 shipped as opposed to $56.00 plus shipping for the JICO. In the case of the conical "V15PHASEIV", Pickering UK sells three different conicals, the D-IV-AM, AT and AC, all of which are less than the JICO.

The only question I'd ask JICO is their recommended VTF range for those two styli.
