Pics of the new to me "Full Rangers"

I wanted to share with the forum a few pics of the beautiful "Full Range" speakers I received from fellow AKer' ejfud....
Absolutely beautiful exotic wood veneer, cabinets are Gary's own design which was fashioned after a Frazier symmetrical loaded bass reflex cabinet, and of course, the Fostex FE103E 4" full ranger driver.
I am amazed at the scope of these speakers......at a glance they should not be able to reproduce that spectrum of sound they do. I don't really understand the "VooDoo" behind these speakers, but I do know what I'm hearing and they sound fantastic. I am now a convert to the "Full Range/crossover-less" design...
EDIT: Plenty of low End no sub required at all....

Glad you're digging the speakers. Are you running them with the hybrid amp?

The wifes still mad that I sold that pair!

Schweet!

How close do you sit and what speaker cable is that?

Best thing - no recap necessary....EVER!!!

Is that how you listen to them? How is the HF response?
The HF response is excellent. I haven't messed around with placement too much; they have sounded very good where I initially put them.
Are you running them with the hybrid amp?
Yup....I have been switching back between using the preamp in the hybrid with it's stock tubes and a line stage with NOS RCA tubes....both sound real good. So far their hasn't been a huge difference...the imaging changes a bit though.

I am about 10-12 feet away. The cable is Kimber 4PR with Nakamichi Bananas...

I saw them in person and even had a listen . There is something about these small Fostex that is a little magical. Every set I've heard image like crazy. The sound stage is right in the middle.

The workmanship of the cabinets is what I refer to as "State Fair" ready. You won't see the quality of this kind of craftsmanship beyond woodworkers competitions or in shows. Great job, Gary, and lucky you, cable guy. :tresbon:

Great looking pair of speakers Bill!

Gary sure knows his woodworking!

very cool-- i have a set of rs 40-1197's that i've been looking for the right plans for-- are the box plans available?

Hey, those look great in your setup, Bill!

I too have had the pleasure of hearing ejfud's creations, and they're really phenomenal! I would encourage you to experiment a lot with placement before you pass final judgment - they look a little close together to me, but you'll know the right spot when you hear it.

Thanks everyone....

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of space right now. But when I get into a new place you can bet that will be a priority. That said, they sound really, really good in their current alignment. So with that in mind, I can only imagine when I have more options for placement....:scratch2:

Those are very nice. I'll reserve judgement on the "no subwoofer required" statement until I hear them, but I am skeptical.

I just had a chance to listen to these again yesterday at Gary’s. He has them in his main system driven by a Redboy reconfigured Magnavox 6BQ5 amp and passive pre.

A sub might be an interesting addition for use in a big room but not needed in a small room IMO. I'm continually amazed at how that little full range Fostex 4" performs in that tweaked Frazier cab. The low bass information coming out of those cabs is rich and solid down to 48-50 cycles would be my guess in that room. Not your "one note" inexpensive HT sub bass either. The bass info. coming out of these, although not the "depths of hell bass", has range and a musically correct scale to it. Very sweet indeed!

If you musical tastes lean more toward Metallica than Coltrane or Fagen, your results might not be as positive.

or
Twisted Sister....
not car audio bass, but accurate and correct IMO without that artificial hump.
