Pink Floyd - DSOTM 30th Anniversery: Vinyl, review

I just picked up Pink Floyd's DSOTM 30th anniversery LP, and I figured i'd post a review for anyone else still buying new vinyl.

First, the attention to detail is fantastic, from the non-standard black poly-lined sleeve, to the 3 full size posters and stickers, they went all out to make sure this was well done and something to hang on to, and to make it really unique compared to the CD issue. Vinyl is well executed 180 gram, perfectly flat, no warping

Sound: Absolutly fantastic, lets put it this way, I had to check to make sure my amplifier was turned on when I first cued it up; the vinyl is dead silent, definitly among the quietist I've heard. There is no compression, or other digital BS, its very well mastered, listening, and looking at my spectrum analyzer both confirm this, music from 20hz-20khz, and nothing even approaching the red zone like you see on new CD's. I should have my hands on a MFSL copy to compare it to tomorrow, but I can say this is head and shoulders above the original issue.

If you're a Floyd fan (who isnt?) this is one to get for sure.

Next up: Traffic - Low Spark of Highheeled Boys reissue, then The Band - Big Pink and Self Titled reissues

Thanks for the heads up I'm always looking for new vinyl. Where did you get from if I may ask?

Good! I just picked up a copy yesterday at Hot Topic as a end of 1st quarter present to myself, can't wait to listen to it. I did notice the very high quality sleeve. However, one of the posters does not appear to be original. I have an old copy of DSotM, and the poster with the pyramids is from a much further distance, and green, not purple. The stickers are much brightly colored as well. But that's all trivial compared to the music... :music:

When you get into huge discussion of which version of DSOTM sounds best. In very general terms you have

UK Harvest (there are 7 different issues)

UK Harvest SQ QUAD (2 different issues)

UK Harvest EMI 100 the vinyl collection

EMI 1997 remaster

EMI 30th aniversary remaster

For the USA

1. Capitol Records - test pressing
2. Harvest Records - 1st issue
3. Harvest Records - 2nd issue
4. Harvest Records - 3rd issue
5. Capitol Records picture disc
6. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab
1. MFSL test pressing
2. MFSL sample record
3. MFSL - 1st issue
4. MFSL UHQR box
5. MFSL - 2nd issue
7. Harvest Records - 4th issue promo
8. Harvest Records - 4th issue
9. Capitol Records - 5th issue promo
10. Capitol Records - 5th issue
11. Capitol Records - 6th issue
12. 1999 RTI remastered test pressing

So as you can see when it comes to DSOTM you have plenty of pressings to chose from. As to which is best hmmmmm. For those select few that have the honor of owning one the Mofi UHQR is usally the top of the pile. Expect to drop well over $400.00 for a decent copy.

Personally I have a early UK Harvest a couple early USA Harvest a Mofi 1st issue and a 30th I have been thinking about picking up a second Mofi copy.

As to which sounds best so far the Mofi is my pick.

Well, I got my MFSL DSOTM (1-017) along with about 40 others in a Craigslist bulk buy this afternoon. I just finished playing them both back to back, and I would say sound quality is near a draw, aside from the MoFi being noisier due to the fact that somebody failed to care for it as well as they should have. Equaling vintage MoFi isnt a bad place to be for a $30 reissue.

These versions of the posters originally came with the quad version IIRC.

Odd move, but I like the posters.

Anyway, I had my first listen this afternoon, and it was extremely well done. I didn't hear any surface noise at all in the music, only a smidgen in the outside run-in grooves. Now, this is one of my favorite albums, and I heard details I had never heard before. A masterful feat. Treble was crisp, bass was not sloppy, and overall the mastering was masterful. One of the best vinyl I own, hands down! :music::D:thmbsp:

I need to unseal mine soon as a mount another cart to my ProJect Xpression III...

I'll also tape it to 15ips R2R

Like any good AK'er, I cleaned mine on a RCM as soon as I could, but could not listen to it until today, probably 3 or 4 weeks later. I picked it up new on Ebay for somewhere between $25 and $30.

What a POS!

I was so mortified at the surface noise, the clicks and pops and crackles that I checked to make sure I hadn't mistaking grabbed my original that's over 30 years old now. If I hadn't used an RCM, I would have guessed this would go away with a proper cleaning, I mean it was brand new in the plastic. Only thing I can think to try is a zerostat gun, way too late to return, and its such a hassle getting a media box and mailing and all.

There was a post earlier by someone who had a similar experience with their new vinyl and surface noise. I now think its a crap shoot at best - spending $30 and even more won't guarantee you anything other than the privilege of being the first to slit open the plastic wrapper. I try and only buy NM or Mint when available, but even then you have subjectivity from the seller as to what they think (most only visually review, not a played review).

I'm sure this is not particular to DSOTM, but other new 180 and 200gm vinyl as well? Anybody else noticing this? No local stores where I live selling vinyl, so I turn to the net.

Bummer! I just ordered this last night from Soundstagedirect I have read a lot of reviews on this one. I does sound like a crap shoot but one that I am willing to take.

I've bought quite a few new 180grams as of late, and the only trouble I've run into as far as vinyl quality was on the 'simply vinyl' label, a copy of Metallicas Black Album to be particular. That said, a good long trip on the Nitty took care of the surface noise; nothing I can do about the warp, but clamp the heck out of it.

So far, I guess I've been lucky, they only new album I've bought that was unlistenable was Pearl Jam 10, clean beautiful vinyl, but shitty recording/mastering compressed doesent even describe it.

If any of you vinyl nuts want to try a good one, try 'Mudcrutch EP Live'. It just came out in November, and it is probably the best Tom Petty album I've heard, both music wise, and sound quality wise. There's not a song on it thats bad, and it sounds damn near like you're there.

Yes, I enjoyed my copy until my son got a hold of it and scratched it to kingdom come. So I just had to order another copy and put my records up high.

Great record, I have that reissue as well. Remarkable that 30+ years after its original release, it still remains timeless and relevant. The sign of a true classic.....BTW, although I personally have never hear it, I have been told by several listeners with discerning ears that the 8-track is phenomenal. I have been told you hear things that you don't hear on any other medium. Anybody own the 8-track? I would love to know what you think.

I listened to the 8 track all through my first year in College 76-77 my room mate had it on 8 track along with most the other Pink Floyd out at the time. As I remember Animals can out right before Christmas 76? Cause I remember listening to it in the room we shared. And I think I moved out to a single come WInter term. As to it being outstanding hmmmm not on his POS all in one stereo.

i bought the 30th anniversary issue online earlier this week, so I'm glad to hear from you guys that it was well done. Can't wait to get it

I just got my copy. i also have two orig copy's..... The 180 is better than the orig's i got... and the poster is diff than the orig....

I picked up a copy at a local record shop last week. Hopefully I can sit down, unseal it, and give it a serious listen today. :music:
