Pioneer CT-F4242 cassette deck keeps auto-stopping

Now that I've put my college era stereo components back together, I'm finding for the most part everything works just perfectly. One exception is my Pioneer CT-F4242 cassette deck. I tried to play a tape this afternoon and it got a little more than halfway through one side and the auto-stop tripped. I hit play, it ran for maybe 20 or 30 seconds and did it again. I fast forwarded and rewound the tape a time or two and tried it again with the same result. When I turn the cassette hub by hand, it feels loose and smooth, no binding. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Just before the tape drops out of play, is the tape counter counting? If not, you have a loose belt...the one that goes from the take-up reel to the tape motion sensor.

I didn't observe that but I did notice in fast forwarding and rewinding the tape the counter stopped moving so you could be onto something. Of course, the next question is would the belt tension be adjustable or do I need to scour the earth for a replacement? I'm not sure where I'd look or what exactly I'd need to look for. It's been many years since I've taken the cover off of that deck but as I recall, things were pretty accessible on the inside.

Oh, I will; don't worry. I also downloaded the factory service manual from HFE so I can see exactly what I'm getting myself into. It is well illustrated, which is helpful. Vintage Electronics' Cassette Repair and Maintenance guide also has some good information. I'm going to read up on this and by the time the belts arrive, I should be well informed and ready to tackle it.
