If you use generic parts, as are widely available through various internet sources, make sure that the flat belt is thin. It should be .020" or, at the worst, .023". Many internet belt vendors do not have a clue that a belt thicker than that will usually cause a significant deterioration in the wow-and-flutter figure (short-term speed stability). The wow-and-flutter introduced by a .025" belt can often be heard.
Here's another rule: a belt should stretch about 5% between fully extended but not under tension and stretched onto the pulley(s). For example, if a belt in a "relaxed" state is 10.0" in circumference, expect it to stretch to 10.5" when it's on the motor pulley. Looser than that and it may slip. Tighter than that and it will load down the motor, cause speed problems, and kill the motor and flywheel bearings.
