Pioneer D1S: no sound output except in Direct mode

I am having the exact same issue with the exact same receiver as the guy in this youtube video. In fact, I almost wonder if I have ended up with his receiver

I get no sound from the unit unless it's in Direct mode. This means I can't access the tone controls, balance, or any sound fields. I re-seated the jumpers (all 5 are installed properly), clicked the reset button several times, and have tried everything I know. Any suggestions? I was so excited to get this as it was advertised as "working," so this is a major bummer.

WIth the interconnects, you can verify if the problem is in the preamp section. Try another amp into the main in jacks. I suspect it really is a preamp problem. I have a $10 VSX-9700S that has a weak channel in the preamp and have checked all edge connectors and wire connectors. I cleaned everything I could get to. Still no joy. I suspect a bad IC somewhere which makes this a door stop. Amp works great so I feed it with a variable output CDP.

I've now read 2 instances where the problem just magically worked itself out after continuous use, so maybe I will get lucky.

i have just skimmed through the schematics and the service manual ..
it appears to be very busy inside . ic switching amongst lots of other goodies ..
first thing i ask is have you tried all inputs and all the different modes of operation ?
and have you followed the user instructions from the user manual ?

Yes to all. I looked inside and it had quite a bit of dust. Cleaned as much as I could with a paint brush and air compressor, with the same results. I think I'm just going to let it run for a few days and see if it pulls a Christine. I'm not skilled enough to fix this thing.

if you have a hair drier try some gentle heat over the boards inside . don't overdo it though . its 50/50 if it will reveal anything .

That's an option of course, unfortunately I'm not a "purist" in that I like to increase treble and bass. Also, this isn't something I picked up for $5. I paid a decent amount of money for it to work 100%, which it was advertised to do and doesn't, so if it can't be fixed with reasonable ease (which I suspect is the case) I'd rather get a refund and put that money toward a fully-functioning unit.

Use a non-conducting probe and start probing the board and wire connectors. You are looking for an unseated connector. Also, probe the chips and the components on the boards for cold solder joints. Usually operation in direct mode aka bypass mode indicates an IC failure.

This is just me, one who has very limited skills. But if it doesn't work as it is supposed to and are able to get a refund.then get the refund.Especially if you pay going rate.Other working examples are available for what I feel ..good prices.

Thanks. ..that's where my mind is at as well. It makes me sick to send it back because otherwise I like it and got it fit a really good price. But it just doesn't seem to be meant to be.

Well, she offered to let me keep it if I will send the remote back (I had previously informed her the remote had some value and could easily defray her return shipping costs and then some if sold individually). So now I can try to find someone to fix this thing. A good resolution for both of us I think. Now I have to find a repair person in Birmingham, Alabama.
