Pioneer SA-9900 VS Pioneer SX-1080

Hi,

I'm kind of lost here.
I do have the following system at home:

Pioneer SA-9900
Pioneer TX-D1000
Pioneer CT-F900
Pioneer SG-9800

My Pioneer SA-9900 is not mint (Face plate need some work or need to be change compare to the other components) The SA-9900 need some works done, one of my friend is working on it (He is a good tech).. He said there is 2-3 capacitors to change (They do not leak but they are at the limit). The problem I am getting is static on the left & Right channel even when the volume is down. The pods are clean.

I was looking on ebay and I saw a SX-1080 (I am using a SX-780 right now and I think the sound is amazing). I was wondering if I should keep my system try to have the SA-9900 repaired (To SPEC) or get rid of the tuner & the SA-9900 and get a SX-1080 instead?

To my EAR, the sound of the SX-780 IS WAY better than the sound of the SA-9900 (Maybe my SA-9900 need a lot of work?)

Thanks, Help me before I do a mistake!! ;-)

SX1080 or fix SA-9900

It all depends what you want to do. The SX-1080 is a nice unit. I haven't heard the SA-9900. A guy I knew had one and he said one channel hummed badly. The caps are a problem with this model? Some of those caps are very large and finding them could be next to impossible. Not to mention expensive. Can you get an estimate for the repair.? Cost to fix vs. Sx-1080 price. Also is the 1080 100%?

Hi,

The cost to fix, it's free for now, it's one of my friend.

That's probably why I will wait a bit... I do have a SX-780 I can use for now while waiting...

The SX-1080 will be around 300$ and it's in mint condition....

The reason why I asked is to know witch one is a better unit...

Thanks,
Eric

I'd keep the 9900. It is the highest watt silver face integrated amp Pioneer made. Considering your repair is free I think you would be crazy to sell it to get a sx-1080 that will probably need work sooner or later.

You could always resell the Pioneer SX-1080 if you don't like it and make a few dollars.... I'd buy it.....

Keep the 9900.

The static is probably the differential transistors on the power amp inputs...

Either the 2sa726's or the second differential of 2sc1451's (the 1451's don't have a stellar reputation) is the most likely source of static.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Thanks,

I didn't go with the SX-1080 he sold for 375$ plus shipping.... I will keep mine and use the SX-780 for now...

Thanks for the tips.

Eric

The devil you know... every purchase of an unknown carries the risk that you'll spend the next year 1st, figuring out what's wrong with the new gear, and 2nd, fixing it.

I had my SA-9900 brought to life and recapped. Needless to say its the ONLY constant in my system for the last 2 years. Lots of equipment has come and gone.

Keep and invest in the SA-9900 IMO.

dew.

Another vote for the SA-9900, I would take one of those and a seperate tuner over just about every Pioneer receiver.....

Old thread but I'll take a chance. My SA-9900 needs a fix. The surrounds of my speakers broke, I then stopped it the amplifier as soon as I heard the noise, but I think the amp suffered damage. I installed a set of new speaker but they don't sound good, lacking bass. I tried another pair of speaker, same results.

I will get the amplifier to a local electronic shop... any idea what I should expect?

Thanks,

JES

Yes... I tried 2 different speakers, two different CD players and then I tried another amplifier on the same setup... the Pioneer really has lost all punch in the lower frequency. :tears:
