Polk Monitor 10s for $170? Worth it?

I found a guy with a pair of excellent cond Polk Monitor 10s. Not sure about the version, but they have the peerless tweeters. He is asking $170 obo for them.
What I would like to know is how they compare to the Polk Monitor 7s with peerless tweets? I have 7s in slightly less cond, but still good and I"m wondering if the 10s would be a significant upgrade.
The seller is a flipper (I bought my 7s from him), but he is a nice guy and I don't mind dealing with him at all. He tends to be unflexible on price though, other than that, a nice guy and a pretty straight shooter in my experience with him.

If these are something to grab I think $170 is a bit high, what do you guys think? A exact duplicate pair in same condition just sold on the bay for $73 located not 20 miles from me. So I'm thinking this guy is about $70 off. What do you think?

Hi Anubis!

That would be too much to pay for me, but if they are in pristine condition someone may be willing to pay that much. I love my 7B's & the 10's are a great sounding speaker.

If they come with stands and are in good shape $170 is not to bad. I would try to talk him down. I just re-caped a pair and they sound great!
 
If they are in excellent condition $170 is not bad and you will get that in return in performance. But I suspect he is probably buffering the cost because of expected offers. Or he actually knows what they are worth or better yet if he's the original owner. I got my 10Bs for $85. I have seen glossy near mint with stands asking $150.

Your eBay comparison is bogus. The seller of the $170 Polks would probably ignore you if you tried that $73 logic on him. You can look at Polk listings now andy many are asking over $200 plus shipping. If a pair went for $73 I would take a better look at the listing for other reasons or consider shipping costs may have kept the bids down. Keep in mind, with listings you may need to double the shipping rate listed.

Bigger and better than your Monitor 7s. I know someone will chime in that Polk said he got it right with the Monitor 7s. I know someone will claim the Peerless are the tweeters to get and people will pay more just hearing the word Peerless. Matter of opinions.

Shipping would probably cost at least $50 or more (probably more as they are too big to ship in one carton and would default to 50# weights each due to size), so unless you got lucky and found a local auction it would cost quite a bit to get them to you.

Plus that $73 set is bogus as the seller only offered Local pickup and no shipping, which cut out a lot of bidders and hurt his price.

Check them out and see how you like them. given it's a pickup the $170 really isn't that bad, but try to work him down to $150 or so. I always start my CL listings higher because I expect folks to haggle a bit.
 
I just sold a good conditioned set with out stands for $150 last week. Whether or not they are a step above the 7s is debatable.
 
I'd say the the 10's are a step up because the greater dynamic range afforded by the deeper bass response of the 10's....
and not caring too much about the purported "imaging" of the 7's.
 
I bought a pair for $3 (yes, three) back in the summer of 2006 and they now do 3-car garage duty at my best friends house. We recapped them last month and it was quite noticeable....even in the garage. Good all around speakers.
 
not to steal Beemer's thunder or anything but I had some polk 10's with stands reveneered in Cherry w/ peerless and it took several days to sell to the cheapskates here in NE at 150.
 
I don't know where the seller got them.
It is local pick up no shipping involved.
No work has been don to them, but the pics look like they are in VG condition. No stands with them.

The price does say $170 OBO. I'll go check them out and if all is well and I really like them I'll see what he says to an offer of $120. I don't know if I am willing to go $150 for them if a re-cap is required, but I might work up to that depending. We'll see, I have history with him and he was really nice to me last time when I picked up a pair of 7s. (He was showing me other stuff knowing full well I was not going to buy anything else at the time nor was he hoping he could persuade me as I made it clear. He just wanted to let me hear different types of speakers he had to educate me).

Meh, $170 is a bit high. I'm not a fan of the passive 10" they use in those models honestly (kinda suck). Good speakers overall though.
 
If it's someone I have dealt with and trust, I would say they were worth $150 even without a recap. Of course listen. But it sounds like you've built a good relationship so he may have recognized your email and might give you a discount. There might be some normal fraying of the veneer at the bottom.

Don't get so caught up in the negotiation that you lose sight of how they sound. How often do they show up locally? You can waste anything you think you save in more travel, cost and buying something that doesn't quite do what the Polks do. And you probably won't have to worry about refoaming - the surrounds are rubber on my 10Bs.

But I will caution that the Polks - any of them, the 5s, 7s, and 10s --- can sound different with different amps. That can explain some of the varied opinions.

I've only dealt with him once as I said, but it was good. I paid him his $80 asking price for the 7s which was probably about $10 to $20 more than I should have considering their cosmetic condition, (still trying to figure out how to fix the grills and pretty up the finsh in the cabs which have some edge peeling, but I'll tell ya, they sound solid and performance is most important.
Not worried about a bit of fraying if any as it does not effect sound. Judging by the pics though the cabinets look to be in excellent condition as do the speakers themselves.

Really good point on the caution point, thanks. I think that would apply to any older speakers especially. I have not hooked them up yet, but I got the 7s because I hear they go very well with a Yamaha CR-2020 which I happen to have that still needs a through going-over before I plug it in again and play with it. (It's one of many projects on my bench).
That leads my to be curious as to how they (Polk 7s or 10s) would sound with my monster Pioneer (SX-1050).
