Polk Monitor 5jr!

Hi Gentlemen,

I have a chance to purchase an excellent pair of Polk Audio Monitor 5 jr speakers for $100. Drivers and cabinets in pristine shape. Are they worth owning? I will be using them with a McIntosh MAC 1900 receiver. Is this a fair price?

Polk 7s and 10s are worth that.

The 5s? Not the best effort. I gave a pair to a friend, and he agreed that they're not up to par with the excellent 7, or the big brother, the 10.

However his son is enjoying them very much at college.

$50 to $75 is a fair price for 'em. $75 in pristine, $50 if not.

I paid $75 for my near-perfect 7s.

I should mention, the models with the peerless tweeter command a bit more value.

But still, I'd hold out for 7s or 10s.

Hi,

They do have the Peerless tweeters. No dents in them either. Thanks! I know where I can find some equally fine Monitor 10's. They have new Definitive Technology woofers in them and have Peerless tweeters.

Dunno if the Definitive Technology woofers help or hurt the sound.

I like to keep things stock, as usually the designer knew more than I did about what worked. I always question the wisdom of swapping drivers.:scratch2:

I believe it can work, but you gotta be either real smart, or real lucky.

The 5 jr is an ok speaker for $20-40 per pair. I use them as rears in my HT. The 10's with anything but the stock woofer makes no sense...buy Def Tech if you want Def Tech otherwise wait for stock 10's.

Like putting cheap tires on a Porsche, IMO. Being a Polk fan, I use 5jr's in our lake cabin, driven by a Vector Research VR3200. Since we rent the cabin out from time to time, that's as much as I'm willing to leave for them.

For $100 you should be able to find 7B's in acceptable condition, although I'd never accept that for mine. The 1900 is a great unit and deserves better than 5jr's. Look for KLH 17's, Dynaco 25's, Epi 100's, something like that. You should find any of them for under $100.

I find that my 1900 marries well with Klipsch Cornwalls, although the price tag and foot print are quite a bit more than we are discussing so far.

Polks With Peerless Tweeters

Are the Peerless tweeters in the Polks the same that were in the Infinity Monitor/Quantum Jr's? If my memory serves me correctly, the Peerless # in the Infinities were K10-8DT or something like that. We're talking the rectangular tweeters, right? they were 2 1/2" high by 4" wide or so, right? :music:

I agree that $100 is too much for the 5jrs and also with the notion of keeping Polks stock. If you are patient, you will find a better deal.
