Polk Monitor 5's What am I looking for after shipment?

I recently bought a pair via Ebay. They were shipped to my house. They were packed very well and after inspecting they seem to have no shipping damage.

I have not hooked them up yet because I have read about how something that has been epoxied internally commonly comes loose, especially during shipment.

I want to check to make sure this has not happened before I hook them up.

What do I need to do? Remove all of the speakers and look for something loose?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Rick

The first thing to do is push gently in on the center speaker. If it moves freely it is OK. The glue Polk used to hold the magnets can let go and then the speaker seizes. I used JB Weld, Quickweld round the outside of the magnet to bond it to the basket.

I had a Monitor 10 get bumped and knocked over at home causing the magnet to come completely off the frame. They were on the floor and simply fell over. The cone moved freely. I would pull the woofers out and inspect them, check the cone movement, and use epoxy or JB Weld along the frame and magnet on the outside . You will love your 5's.

Yeah. Best to pull woofers first if you want to be totally sure. Or hook a voltmeter up to the terminals, if you can move cone back and forth freely with no rubbing or scraping and it generates voltage then the magnets are still in place.

Yes, the failure of the glue holding the magnets in place on the "midbass" drivers on the vintage Polks at this late date is, unfortunately, an all too common failure mode. Apparently the driver's OEM didn't bother to assess the stability of the adhesive used over a service life of four-plus decades; imagine that ;-)

The magnet shift problem is easily diagnosed, though, as already described.

Be aware that the largest 'driver' is a passive radiator. As such, it did not have a magnet in the first place. The middle driver is the one you need to check.

All advise given above is absolutely correct. Also check the miters on the edges. If they are not square, (severely off) they could of been dropped, HARD, then follow the above advise.
