Polk Monitor 7 info, specs.

Love my 7B's. I've not hear the original, what's the main differences between the 7A and 7B (with the Peerless tweeter with the tiny hole in the center)?

The visual differences of the early 7A is the plain paper PR, no coating and Velcro dots to attach the grill. IIRC, the mid-driver is plain paper as well. Polk made a lot of changes on the fly back then, so you'll see different versions of the 7A.

I’ll get some pics of my early 7 speakers and the A version that I bought from the same guy.

Here’s pics of the “7” box and back, showing the terminal strips.
Passive radiator is 8” and made of paper, as seen in previous pic.

Here’s pics of the “7A”.
It has the larger passive, but made of paper!
Both the 7 and the 7A have the Peerless tweeters with no hole.
I don’t have the boxes for these.

Here’s the destroyed grilles from the 7A speakers!!! ( I need to find a pair)
And the original wires supplied by the audio dealer for the 7. 18 gauge!!!

Damn, bummer about the grills. And that's cool to see the originals. I couldn't see the tiny hole in the Peerless tweeter like my 7B's have. Is that a later change as well? Crazy to see that style of terminal strip as well, reminds me of the ones used on McIntosh amps.

Anyone with a CNC machine near you? You can have a new set of grill baffles made out of MDF using the old ones as a guide. I know someone with 3D printers and laser cutters. Hopefully he will get a CNC machine soon. When he does he will be my next best friend. :D

Is there a brand or level of capacitor upgrade for the crossovers that hits a sweet spot for value? Seems like a guy could spend more that the cost of these speakers. Would like an upgrade, but don’t want to brake the bank. Thanks for your thoughts!

The Peerless tweeters that Polk used with a hole in the center of the cloth dome...
See pics above: unholey tweeters were used in early production.

Absolutely loved the 7c's I purchased back in the mid 80's. My bro-in-law has them now. We rebuilt the X-over 10 or so years ago when he bought them. They still look and sound great.

Could not agree more! I've always hoped that I would find a reasonably priced speaker in this class. Has not happened yet. It compares well with my Mirage SM-3. Both very simple 2-way designs with stunning sound.

Generally I drive the Polk Monitor 7 with a Dynaco Stereo 70. And use them in a mid-field situaltion--about 6 to 9 feet away, elevated to ear level, and with a few rugs and books and curtains.

Really hard to beat. But I will say that they sound best playing combo jazz, chamber music, and acoustic folk-rock. I mean, play what you like but these are beautiful sounding at any reasonable volume and within a reasonable frequency range. They are not PA material, but who wants that? They are not surround sound boomers. But, again, who wants that?

I have, frankly, never heard direct-to-disc jazz trombones produced as well as on Monitor 7s. Or Keely Smith's pop vocals. Or Laurindo Almieda's acoustic guitar.
