Polk Monitor Series 4 ?????

Hi Wolverine!

Nice pickup on the Polk 5B's for sure & if they have the Peerless tweets then you have another pair of wonderful sounding speakers. Not saying that the SL series tweets are less of nice sounding. I just tend to like the crispness of the Peerless.

Polk made different variants I read of those that had the logo on the grilles & others on the cabinets. My 7B's have the logo on the cabinet.

Enjoy the tunes on those speaks,

I'm new to this thread and a little bit tech challenged. I just got my beloved Harmon Kardon 730 twin back from a complete rebuild and I am looking for speakers for it as my Centurian 6's are gone to the stereo shop in the sky. ( All the L pads are shot as well as the woofers, tweeters and super tweeters and the cabinets are beat to rat poop.) I was thinking of either some Polk monitor 7's or some Cerwin vagas (a little harsh but good rockers) or some RFT BR 30's. Any suggestions on a good speaker match for this beautiful old receiver? I play mostly vinyl ( I have over 3000 lp's from John Mayo to Beetles to Stones to Steele Pulse to Itzak Perlman to say nothing of the Anderw sisters and Bing Crosby

Hi John!
Yea, that's a fine receiver indeed & I'm tech challenged as well! :)

The Polks would be a fine addition I would think & don't own any CV's, but they would be okay. Look at some ADS L or JBL L series speakers too. ADS L520s or 620s would be so nice & JBL 2600s like I have, L36 or upwards. Your ears & pocketbook will ultimately win out!

Let us know what you get!

Screenshot_20190223-231454.png Does anybody know what tweeters these might be in these 4.6 Polks? I'm looking for a set that looks like these to upgrade the clearish ones in my monitor 10s. Could this be the RD0 194?

Just acquired a pair of these with the standard tweeters, but unfortunately one woofer is locked up so I won't be hooking these up until I find a replacement driver. I'm a bit surprised by the amount of people who go on about these speakers, and how they sound, yet nobody is replacing the electrolytic capacitors in the crossovers with films. I wouldn't judge these or compare them to the Peerless equipped units until that is done.

The dampening seems pretty good for units of this size. I have a modern polk floorstanding speaker in the corner, and the cabinet sounds as hollow as a laundry detergent bucket, when you bang on the side. These 4's seem pretty solid. Only thing I've ever owned that was more solid was a pair of Teac LS-MC90's, which cause me to think they are overdamped.

If the cone does not move, your woofer may have the dreaded magnet shift that Polk is infamous for having. If the voice coil is not damaged, the magnet can be shifted back to position and glued in position. Search for "Polk magnet shift repair" and you will find much info on how others have brought their Polk woofers back to life.

There is a thread here somewhere about re-centering the magnets. Its basically a piece of PVC tubing with holes drilled around it with long screws going through the holes with double nuts to center the magnet.
