Polk Monitor

I posted this over on the Polk forum but haven't got any responses so far.
I found a pair of Polks at a thrift store in great shape but I'm unable to find any specs on them.

The back just says Polk Monitor Series then it's got 4.5 with a serial number.

The Polk site shows Monitor 5's, 4's, 5jr, 4.6.
Anybody know what I have here?

I would appreciate any info and opinions on them.

saw you post on the polk site, does your speaker look like the 4.6 on the site? a picture would help. i'm kinda curious as to what you got there. i am assuming it is a 6 1/2" driver with a tweeter (no passive radiator, ala monitor5jr and above. remember seeing a polk on ebay that someone said was the monitor series, has a tweeter and 2 smaller drivers 5 1/2" (?) hard to tell from the picture (wish i had a link, but this was a while ago.)

definitly need a pic, or a better description.

ooops, just noticed no pic of the 4.6 on the polk site. description just said 1 " tweeter, but nothing about the midbass. i know the monitor 4 was a 1" tweeter with a 6 1/2" driver in a very compact cabinet, but have no idea of the 4.6 (or your 4.5) If Russman or the other polk guys sees this, they might know more.

I know this is a really old thread, but I just picked up a pair of Polk Monitor 4.6's at Goodwill in really good condition for $12 for the pair.

I did some looking around in the "Club Polk" section at www.polkaudio.com and I came across the following:

This lists the specs for the Polk Monitor 4.6 and it seems to me this speaker is identical to the Monitor 5jr except the 5jr comes in a more fancy box with a more spiffy grill, but otherwise I think the 4.6 and the 5jr are the same speaker.

Anyway, I cannot believe how good they sound. I'm using them in a bedroom system and they replaced a set of mint KLH 22's (slightly smaller version of the classic KLH 17 but same drivers) and they have better bass and higher highs than the KLH's, but I have not gotten around to applying new silicone to the cloth surrounds of the KLH's to get a better acoustic seal.

Anyway, I've never heard a better set of $12 speakers!

I have the 7s. The are good, not great, speakers. I'm surprised to see so many people here also are on the Polk Forum, because my experience with the Polk Forum is: It BLOWS. The weirdest part of Polk speakers is people seem to think it's the norm to have drivers blowing like so many kernels in a popcorn popper.

There are slight differences. The 4.6 uses the SL2500 tweeter, the MW6502 mid-driver with the BE4500-B crossover. The 5jr uses the SL2000 tweeter, the MW6502 mid-driver with the BE5500-A crossover. The 5jr Series 2 uses the SL2500, the MW6502 mid-driver with the BE-5500-B crossover.

I'll say one thing about the folks on the Polk forum, they have enough class not to post such an ignorant comment on their forum. As for your last comment, it's far from the norm for a Polk speaker or any speaker to blow a driver. What proof do you have to back up your comment?

In part could be because the only speaker I've ever blown was the monitor 7.

I'm not making any assumuptions, your comments speak for themselves. Besides that, I didn't say you were ignorant, I said your comment was. There is a difference.

It's funny how often your line, "because it's not worth bothering with, feel free to have last comment.", is used when someone doesn't have a leg to stand on.

You're right, you should have just left it alone.

Blown Speakers

Please,

Enough of this talk about blown drivers.

I put my self through university working in an audio store and saw plenty of blown speakers, and about 99% of them were driven too high at parties and the amps clipped and blew the tweeters. The other 1% were when someone would hook up a huge amp like a McIntosh 2500 to a $100 speaker and try and push it to far. In these cases, parts in the crossover were generally fried as well as all of the speakers in the cabinet.

As for myself, I've only been stupid enough to blow one speaker: And it was a subwoofer - I had an amp I had not used in years and instead of being smart and bringing it up on a Variac and testing the outputs with a voltmeter I made a stupid assumption that it was OK and hooked it up, and promptly fried the voice coil in my sub.

I learned my lesson.

glad you're happy with your 4.6 Polks.

I've got some Polk 7s, and really enjoy them. I thought I'd maybe like 'em, thought they'd be okay, with that little 6.5" driver in a pretty big cabinet, but they suprised me with what they could do.

A good set of 5s with these would make for a great home theater.

I really like the Monitor 5. Nice small speaker with plenty of bass and great highs.

As for blowing a monitor 7... I don't really see how "the only speaker i've ever blown was the monitor 7" translates to "people seem to think it's the norm to have drivers blowing like so many kernels in a popcorn popper."
