Polk sda 2a

I recently purchased a set of polk sda 2a from CL. Brought them home hooked them up to my Marantz 2330 that was fully restored. Used a home made interconnecting cable. My receiver almost got through the first track before burning out sparks and smoke. So my unit is back at the repair shop.

If the amplifier is common ground, then the two channels negatives are already connected correct?

Just what for and why is the cable even needed?

Seems redundant.

A while back I bought some 50 dollar SDA-1's.
They kept immediately shutting down my amplifier and smoked a receiver before even coming remotely close to listening levels.
It turns out they measured about 5 ohms without the interconect however 1.8 ohms with the connect.
With a bit of volume, who knows how low.
Definitely mis-wired, mis-modded, perhaps a or wrong replacement driver or two, after all they all look the same.
 
I had to chuckle at that gentleman's comment about the tonal balance and veiled sound as I've never heard anyone say that before.
 
I don't think there is a receiver or avr around that can handle any of SDA line. This why over in Polkville to a man they suggest at the very least add an amplifier to the preouts of your avr or just go separates. You've heard this before, they need lots of power and high current to run the way they are supposed to. Don't experiment w/ your avrs or receivers read the handbook on anything SDA it's free and I will post it again.As they say over on the Polk site get your read on.Veiled sound no way .Wide open insane sound stage and imaging. If all the pieces are correct and your placement follows the rules that are laid out told many times here.

I didn't make the cable. I was given a home made cable from the seller. It is made from 14 gauge speaker wire with two flat pin crimped on both ends. The cable when plugged in wasn't a snug fit. Could be my error. I wanted to hear it with the cable since sound go without it and heard it sound better with it. Fortunately my receiver can be fixed

Is one blade larger than the other?
 
My SDA-SRS 2.3 cables had 2 wires. One wire sent an out of phase signal from the right speaker to the left, the other wire sent an out of phase signal from the left speaker to the right. The common of each speaker was the return, and hence the need for the negative terminals in the amplifier to be tied together (they share a common ground or (-)). With this technique, 2 inner drivers in the left speaker and 2 inner drivers in the right speaker where out of phase with the rest of the drivers in their respective speakers. This out of phase condition created a "black hole" for audio, keep the left ear from hearing most of the right speaker and the right ear from hearing most of the left speaker. The result was simular to binaural recordings of days long gone, creating a larger then life sound-stage. I'd estimate the sound stage increased by 1/3 the size. Some recorded material had a audio realization of being almost to the complete left or right of my seating position. That would give the sound stage width at about 180°.

I have to make a correction to your post. The standard pin/blade SDA cable for your 2.3's only uses the pin connection. The blade is only used for support, there's no connection, so the same wire carries the SDA signal.

With the optional AI-1 isolation transformer, which allows the use of non-common ground amps, both the pin and the blade connections are used.
 
No both are the same size.

Yeah, that's not good. If you look at the socket you'll see one slot is wider than the other. This was done on purpose to prevent reversing the connection, which I'm sure is what happened in your case. Your Marantz should have no problem with driving those speakers.

Polk still sells a version of the blade/blade SDA cable for around $40.00. Just give them a call to order.
 
I'm planning on picking up a set of these soon. I was planning to power them with my Anthem PVA7. I can't tell if this amp has common grounds or not. Can anyone help me identify? Also, I need to get the interconnect cable on my own. Does anyone have a source?
 
It's a 7 channel amp and therefore common ground.

The blade/blade SDA cable is available from Polk. I believe it's $40.00.

Thanks for the reply. I'm having trouble finding the cable on their website. What am I supposed to be searching for? I've sent an email already, waiting on reply.
