Polydome K's Used In Which Infinities?

I am pulling the above quote from a thread posted here back in 2009 to ask if someone can clarify or help me. Do all these models really have Pollydome K's which can be interchanged with each other? Which Infinity models have Polydome K drivers that I can use in my Kappa 8's and Kappa 9's?

My most urgent question is if a Polydome from a Kappa 6.1 can be used in a Kappa 8 or Kappa 9? Thanks.

They are different drivers. The Polydome K in the K6.1/6.2, K7.1/7.2, and K8.1/8.2 (and probably the K9.1/9.2) is PN 902-5793. The Polydome K in the K6, K7, K8, and K9 is PN 902-3075.

As to whether they could be used in the K8/K9, they are both 3" drivers and look to have similar bolt patterns, so they will probably fit without too much trouble. What I don't know is if the output levels are similar.

The polydomes in the .1 versions have a screen behind the dome to help keep it from getting pushed in. That may be why they have a different number. Other than that my bet would be they are the same. Not 100% sure as I do not have the .1 drivers here to compare...

The .1 Polydome drivers had been recommended by Infinity (prior to their discontinuation) as replacements for those in the original Kappa series. Take that for what it's worth. Regarding levels, the Kappa 8 and 9 have level controls for each driver except the woofer, so you should be able to adjust for any mismatch.

The x.1 had a mesh dome behind them they marketed it as a "diffuser" which is laughable at best. It's to prevent damage to them...

The main difference between the two polydomes series I kappas and series II is the bezel itself. The series I had a beveled bezel as the driver was surface mounted on the baffle.

The series II was a round ring no bevel as it was recess mounted. In terms of drivers itself they are 100 percent identical

While very rare, Infinity also released a Polydome K for car stereo use. It was the Infinity Kappa RSDS polydome. It used what looked like a carbon fibre type material for the dome. Considering it's use for car audio, the dome is reported to age well, and doesn't deteriorate like the original soft Polydome. I have no idea if the they sound exactly the same, but there's not many choices around to keep these speakers playing.

I have a couple of pairs of these, including one set installed in my Kappa 8s. If you find a pair at a reasonable price, grab them; they're pretty much a drop in replacement and sound great (although TBH I haven't done a head-to-head comparison with the original Polydomes).

BTW, you'd think that RSDS stands for Reference Standard Driver Series but it doesn't (which is unfortunate, since the word driver works in two ways).

At one time, one of the best places to find Infinity spare parts was Europe, especially Germany (home to many US soldiers stationed there. Many military PX's sold Infinity speakers). Plus, the EU has very different consumer protection laws than here, which includes providing spare parts for a much longer time period. So, I've found new spares at Infinity Germany, or eBay (none mine), searching through different European eBay sites.
