Poor FM Reception

My Technics SA-5370 has very poor FM reception. Connected to the same antenna, my JVC pulls in 12 stations, most from 35-40 miles away, but the Technics only picks up 2 stations, both from here in town. The pointer is also off by a good bit, when picking up 102.1 FM it points to about 101, and when picking up 99.1 it points to a out 98.

Any ideas on what's causing it and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Not sure about the poor reception. As far as the pointer being off, many times when the pointer is fully to one side or the other, but someone forces the tuning knob to turn further in that direction anyway, it can cause this kind of offset. The "easy fix" is to bring the pointer fully to the other side and force turn the knob the other direction slightly until it matches again.

Professional service is always advisable. However, if there are economic considerations such as the service will cost more than the piece is worth, then you might try a home fix. Locate the oscillator trimmer on top of the tuning gang and clean with residue free contact cleaner. This will improve signal strength. This same control can be used to center the dial string on the station. I use this home fix on BOTL to MOTL receivers that almost always had reception problems due to old age. Success rate was about 3 for 4.
