Popular band(s) you can't handle.

:D
I do however realize that most consider Pop music to be a genre itself of Popular music not all Popular music is considered to be Pop music by most even though in my mind it should be. A lot of people think Pop music singers have no talent because it consist of mainly easy to remember lyrics and music with up beat tempos that are easy to dance too, I disagree some pop singers have musical talent others don't IMHO

The meaning of Pop music changed from most popular music and virtually all rock and roll in the late 60's to mean a specific sub set of popular music for most, to me any popular music is Pop music. I suppose we are not all going to agree on the definition.

During the late 1930’s, Frank Sinatra during a 24 hour dance contest was interviewed by Billboard magazine as he had the number one hit in the country. During the interview, Frank coined the phrase pop music for any song that made it to the top-10.

People personally within accepted norms enforce certain social standards, music from artists like John Denver, Ray Stevens, Micheal Jackson and ABBA are pop music even though the artists mentioned probably had just as many top10 hits. Music that is not accepted by the crowd as seriously accomplished music is pop music.

It's not that complicated... "Pop" can mean more than other thing, depending on the context in which it's being used. In one sense it's just short for "popular" and in this case can mean the broader world of "popular music," which is very brad indeed and includes, rock, soul, rap, country, blues, dance music, etc (just about everything that isn't jazz or classical). In another sense "pop" is a more specific label for a genre of music. Like a lot of words, it has more than one definition...

NOT !!

Well... this is what I found on Wikipedia... which agrees with my interpretation of it.

"Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many disparate styles. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960…"

Yes, that adult status quo during the 1950’s demonized the new Rock and Roll sound labeled it popular among kids….pop music !

But, twenty years earlier Frank Sinatra coined the phrase pop music for any song that got into the top-10 !

Pop music is a term that is accepted by a group of people that expresses a definition that is agreed upon within a group of people.

That’s why people think differently about the definition of the phrase…pop music!

Then people that don’t know anything about anything….write about everything !!

This thread has gone off on a ridiculous tangent based upon the inclusion of the word "pop" in the title. "Pop" has many different meanings. The original poster, in his opening post, refers to "U2" as an example of a pop band he doesn't like. I would not in a million years consider U2 "pop", even though they were popular (U2 is widely considered "legit", even if many find them annoying). Some people might consider the Beatles when they first hit the US in the early 60's as "pop". To others, "pop" means current music (e.g. implies currently "popular") regardless of whether it is quality music or not. Others interpret "pop" as older music that was not considered serious or legit (e.g. Bay City Rollers (no offense to BCR fans :D)). None of those views about what is pop is wrong -- they are just different interpretations of an inherently ambiguous term, from different people, of highly differing ages, covering vastly different eras of music.

The definition of "pop" has nothing to do with the thread -- the real topic is "Famous bands you can't handle". The OP can correct me, but I think that was the intent (given U2 in the opening post). This thread would be a million times more effective if a moderator (with OP approval) changed "pop" to Famous ("Famous bands you can't handle").

Please return the discussion to bands that you hate, rather than more unwinnable arguments about a singular perfect definition for "pop" music when no such single definition exists and the definition of pop has no relevance to the intent of this thread.

If an act's music was played on Top 40 radio the music was Pop. Nancy Sinatra and Cream were both Pop. As were Blue Cheer and Sonny and Cher. And Roger Miller and The Who. Not to mention both The Rolling Stones and Ferrante and Teicher. Both Vanilla Fudge and Bobbie Gentry. Both Sam and Dave and Leslie Gore.

If a genre is widespread in Pop music then that genre becomes part of Pop. Rock and Roll and its offshoots are thus Pop music, even flaccid offshoots like Pink Floyd and Yes. No, they sure as Hell ain't Elvis or Little Richard but they're Pop.

It's instructive to see what acts were on the British TV show Top of the Pops. Some of acts on the show were the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Doors, Pink Floyd, the Who, Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Motorhead and the Ramones.

I feel better now.

yeah it's pretty clear what the OP was trying to say, and the topic has been discussed (too) many times already.
We all have our preferences, so what?

Preferences about what "pop" means? It's irrelevant.

Preferences regarding individual bands? -- or rather the opposite of preferences for individual bands -- post them, that's the topic.

Preferences of whether discussing disliked bands is interesting? Start another thread to debate that. As with all threads, if you don't like the topic, don't participate in the thread.

I don't hate any bands all though there are some that have more songs that I like then others, I rarely listen to Classical or Death Metal one being that Classical music is just that, it is just music no singing as a rule and Death Metal is to my ears is just a bunch of Screaming at the top of your lungs with no real purpose other then to make you go deaf IMHO for those that like either genre good on you no disrespect intended music likes and dislikes are very subjective just because I don't like it or cant relate to it does not mean it is bad it is just not for me..

In reference to the thread title, I've found that the Black Crowes are pretty "hard to handle" :)

Full Disclosure: Actually, I like the Black Crowes, or at least that song, don't know their other music

I have plenty!

Guns and Roses
The Cure
Pearl Jam
Any 80s era hair metal band
Contemporary commercial country music
(I do like some of the more classic stuff and some newer more roots oriented stuff)
House music - I'm OK with dance music and electronic music, I just don't like that "4 on the floor" rhythm.
Styx
Supertramp
Billy Joel

Other stuff that I don't quite hate, realize a bit of the genius of and may even enjoy some of the stuff, but I somehow still can't get my head around...
Rush
Primus
Tool
Paul Simon - I know he's great and like the Simon and Garfunkel stuff, but mostly his music doesn't do much for me
Metallica - Some of the earlier stuff was OK and satisfyingly heavy, but their vibe wears thin quickly for me
AC-DC - Ditto with Metallica
U2 - I have a lot of the same criticisms of them that other's have, though I do like some of their early music

Folks with gritty voices that tend to put others off but which I really dig:
Bob Dylan
Bruce Springsteen - At least his 70s era stuff
Patti Smith
Captain Beefheart
Rolling Stones

Billy Joel... I love Weird Al's version of "It's Still Billy Joel, To Me." :)
