Hello,

I'm currently house sitting and realized I need a small portable sound system to use with my laptop. I'm thinking Minimus 7s with a T-amp. I'd appreciate any ideas. Currently, I'm using some Altec computer speakers, but I want something with a little better quality. When I'm programming, I like to listen to music, but do not like headphones. This thing can be ac powered. Also, are there any quality small powered speakers out there. I had Rolands at one point, but they would be too large for this application. I'd like something no bigger than 3 Minimus 7s give or take a few inches.

I just picked up a Muse M20 Ex 2 - TA2020 based t-amp. I had an issue with the power supply but the company promptly refunded me 10 bucks which worked out great because I forgot that I had a Samlex 13.8v regulated linear power supply. I turned it down to 13.6vdc and it seems to work great so far. Right now it's driving my Realistic Nova 10's that I just posted about but I would have liked to have heard it with my Polk Monitor 30's. I'd like to hear a pair of Minumus 7's also.
 
After reading the post above, I have to admit...Alesis makes some nice powered monitors and that looks like a great deal.

I have a pair of Alesis Monitor One's on the desk now. Not powered, I have a break out box. Not portable, either, a little heavy and bigger than a shoe box.

But I can speak to the quality, which is pretty darn good.
 
Sony APM 100's. Flat, square piston woofers. Light weight, slightly larger than a Minimus 7 and much better sounding. Big sound stage for such a little speaker.
 
Thanks for all the responses. I like the Audio Engines, but I kind of like a diy solution.

The QSC K12s will not fit in my luggage. I need a system that is small yet good quality and at say less than $150.00 for the system. I do not need a loud system.
 
You could try the Fr125 and tweeter kit from Creative Sound, mount them on open baffles and use a chip amp. It fits your budget and would be easy to pack. If you got an inkling to build boxes, later, you would have the rest of the package.

Here is an aperiodic box using the FR125 that I built awhile back. They image like crazy and are great for nearfield:
