Power amp hook up

Cope1

My a@# hurts!
OK I need some advice from someone with pro audio experience, I have some big studio speakers I want to drive with a power amp, using either a regular CD player or tuner with regular RCA output connections. The inputs for the power amp are either XLR or 1/4" plug type. I know I need a pre amp of some kind, right? or a mixer, and I just happen to have a couple pics of the mixer Im considering, now tell me where to hook up the CD player! I assume to Tape In connection? someone let me know please :scratch2:

There's a couple different ways you can hook up a source unit to that mixer...

You could just go RCA to RCA and run from the source output to the tape input like you mentioned.

Or... you could go from RCA to 1/4" and run the left channel to line in on channel one then run the
right channel to line in on channel two.

I'd do the first setup vs the second setup as you have to make sure all the settings were the same
on each channel...

I would think that a normal preamp of your choosing would be better than using a mixer...

You just want to play it as a stereo correct?

In a pinch, you can hook the CD player up to the "tape line in" on the back of the mixer. If your CD has a variable output, you could hook the CD player up directly to the amp, and control the gain from your CD player. You'd need an RCA - 1/4 adapter from Rat Shack.

Ultimately, if you want to hook up multiple sources to the mixer, you'd be better off getting some RCA - Balanced interconnects.

Curious question: You don't indicate that this set up will be for a studio or pro audio application. A preamp might be easier than a mixer if this is not for a studio applicaiton. You'd simply need a RCA - 1/4 adapter to hook the preamp to the amp. Have you considered this option?

It has pretty much been covered in the responses above, but I will add some more (or maybe just restate it.)
It looks like with that Peavy mixer, you can hook up one rca device, punch one of the buttons, and send it through the master fader and to the outputs. No tone controls. You will need a connection from the mixer to the amp, which you have not described, but easiest is just 1/4 to 1/4 unbalanced, or balanced Tip-Ring-Sleeve if the amp accepts that. If you have more inputs to run, you will have to get some rca to 1/4 inch cables to make the connection to the stero mixer channels 3/4 or 5/6. I don't think that rca to balanced interconnects will get you anything, I doubt you are running more than 18 feet from the source to the mixer. You can also use channels 1 and 2 and pan them, as has been mentioned before. You will get the tone controls on these channels. For that mixer, you have a maximum of four stero devices.
Unless you have a hankering to hook up the microphone, you will get quieter performance from a real stereo preamp, and more inputs usually, than the Peavy. For example some nice Yamaha preamps are on that auction site at around 100 bucks or less, depending on which one. You will also get a really nice phono preamp in the unit if that might come into play.
It all depends on what you have already and what you really want to do.
Hey if the amp has gain controls you can just hook it up with a rca to 1/4 cable easily available - for only one input. Change the cable to change the input (what a pain that would be, but cheap !! )

Are you using a pro amp that needs line level to drive it? If it is, I'd use the line inputs on one of the stereo channels and correct gain structure. IMHO the mic pre's on the Peavey aren't very quiet, and would bypass them.

Poweramp

OK well I didnt really listen to anyone, so I went and bought this amp and mixer, hooked up my CD player and tuner and now I have the rockinist' garage in the neighborhood, amp puts out 240W per channel, and the mixer has 2 stereo inputs with a little 3 band equalizer, for $39 it works for me, plus I can plug in my guitar and plink around! :music:
