PrimaLuna ProLogue Preamp?

Hi guys. I have an opportunity to get a great deal on a used PrimaLuna ProLogue preamp. I currently run a McIntosh MC2505 vintage amp with a Rega PL2 turntable. I’d love to pair my solid state amp with a tube preamp to get the best of both worlds. The reviews on the ProLogue are strong, but would appreciate any insights. And welcome suggestions for other preamps. I’m more partial to a newer tube preamp than vintage. Thanks.

What is your budget?

Do you want a working or restored unit, or one that might require some work to get it running?

How do you feel about a kit, one that you’d need to build and solder?

Consider a Tubes4HiFi SP14, pre-built V23-K1 model (with left/right gain controls and remote control master volume). Upgrade the caps to Mundorf. You'll never be sorry. The beautiful, linear sound of 6SN7s in a special "Aikido" noise cancelling circuit. One of the legendary bargains in hifi, IMO.

The primaluna units are well made. The only reservation I would have with the prologue series is the higher output impedance. If you keep your ICs short between the preamp and amp should not be an issue. But if you run 20+ feet or longer to your amp could be an issue.

Cary SLP98, used ones within your budget. Tubes are not buried inside the case where it makes tube rolling easy, but also, they have the power supply remotely located via a cable to help keep background noise low. The 6sn7 is a nice tube and the Cary has a good rep. The Cary 05 is better but above your budget.

IME a solid state amp of almost any type will simply mask the benefit of the tube preamp. The Prologue is loaded with 12AU7s though, so I'm not sure you would benefit from the transparency tubes can provide anyway.

All very helpful. Ultimately I decided to pass. I learned the unit doesn’t have a phono stage built in. And some of the insights from this group and others made me think there are better alternatives. I greatly appreciate the info.
