Problem with my Fostex A8

I recently bought a Fostex A8 reel to reel. I don't really know how to explain this problem, but when the tape is threaded the rewind and return to zero go very slow/ barely spin. When tape isn't threaded the rewind works fine. Could I be doing something wrong? Let me know. Also fast forward and play work just fine.

If the rew 'works fine' without a reel, but not with one, with the load it adds to the motors and drive components, then rew is not fine. Sounds like poor torque from the rewind motor. You may need to get a schematic and see what the voltage should be at that motor, or you can measure the voltage at the other motor while running tape, and compare with the rew motor-should be the same. Check lubrication on the suspect motor, see how much current is being drawn compared to the other motor when in rew\ffd mode.
