Problems with turntable to Quad 33 phono input

Hi everyone,

I am currently having more interest in records listening and am now trying to figure the best way to connect my Dual 1225 turntable to my Quad 33/405 combo.

I would like to use the Quad 33 phono stage which is probably better than my Pyle audio phono pre-amp...

Currently my Dual is connected to this Pyle audio pp999 thing then to the Tape imput. Seems to work nicely, however I would enjoy plugging directly to the phono input without using the Pyle preamp and listening to the result.

The problem is, when I connect to the phono imput, and "stereo" is selected (as I normally do), It's only playing through one speaker. When I press "left" and "right" I get 2 speakers working but it seems like the same audio from both.

Has anybody else have experience in this matter with the disc input? Is the phono stage having some fault?
Thanks in advance!

The first thing to check would be dirty contacts for the selector switches or the plug in Disc Adapter board. You'll probably need to hit those with DeoxIT.

That said the Pyle PP999 may be cheap but it's a very good budget phono preamp. It can be made even better if you're up for some soldering.

Hi Wizard, thanks for your reply.

I have now DeoxIted every possible contact apart for the switches !! Nothing changed unfortunately. It seems cleaning the switches requires some skill haha.

I am thinking some component might be defective but am unsure where to start. And thanks for the comment on the P999 !

Have a nice day ,
William

One other thing you can try is to work the switches repeatedly and see if that helps. Sometimes this can wear off some of the oxidation enough that it will work okay.

I watched a video where someone did some noise tests on budget phono preamps. The $15 Pyle 999 came in much quieter than some more popular brand budget phono pre's costing $50 or more dollars.

I'd also take a look at the other end of the signal path...the cartridge/head connections.

Usually with those "33" connections if worked carefully, there's little issue, but follow through with what WWG suggested as well.

Hi Quadman, cartridge/head connections are working good. Turntable works perfect when using radio or tape input (with Pyle phono preamp). Preferably tape because I can play at a higher volume with good channel balance since it has lower sensitivity. My bluetooth receiver I use 70% of the time is usually connected to the Tape input, so it's a bit annoying to always connect/disconnect cables.

So only the disc input is problematic. I will try to get to those switches for some cleaning.

Thanks

Hi Peeno,

I was wondering if you ever found the cause behind your "Disc" input issue. I am experiencing the very same thing.

Hi Dave,

I decided to change the Phono amplifier board and the Disc card as well. I bought new boards and it is now working perfectly.

I guess some components were dead ! My guess would be in the phono pre amp however I cannot tell you for sure.

Cheers

Alright, thanks for getting back to me. I did the same thing when I was working on the 303 power amp. New boards and components. I'll have a look see what I can do.
