Enjoy the journey
In a weak moment at work this morning I found, and promptly BIN'ed, this little treasure:

Kenwood 650

I figure the faceplate looks decent, and it should make for a good winter project, so for $200, how could I go wrong? From the sellers email/invoice, looks like he's not charging me shipping either :tresbon: I'll have plenty of time to really go through it, I even have the service manual. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to find a parts unit or two to scavenge some knobs/switch covers off of, but for now I'm not too concerned about it. I've only seen one other of the Model 650, so they seem to be quite rare. I checked with the seller and it has the US plug and has switchable voltage on the back. Look for LOTS to come on this amp over the next few months...

sweet score!

hopefully she'll respond to a couple of deoxit treatments aaron, yee-haaa! :naughty:

That's the plan of attack; check DC offset, give her the Deoxit treatment and see what happens. I've got a pair of sacrificial speakers if things go awry. The seller is including an original Model 600 brochure :) It's going to be double boxed and should go out today or tomorrow. Hopefully it arrives before I leave for Mexico (January 1).

Looks great, Aaron. It seems like a lot of the 500s and 600s have bent switch covers, and I think I know why. People pick them up, and rest the front of the amp against their waists; wouldn't surprise me at all if the contacts on the switches are bent--should be fairly easy to fix.

I saw that Sunday Aaron and almost pulled the trigger, but I have so much stuff around here at the moment that I need to sell off a few pieces.

I also want you to know that I hold you responsible for my Kenwood obsession. I can't get enough of the stuff. Love and have kept the KA-8006 in the lisening room nonstop since its been fixed. Now I need to find a 700 like yours and I'll be set.

Gary

Gary, you've got to come check out the NHT subs paired up with the Kenwood 700M. Although, that would probably only make the addiction worse :scratch2:

Just passin' on the love...

Actually, I'm rather surprised it lasted as long as it did. I saw one other one before on ebay and it only got 1 bid (also a repair unit). This one looks fairly decent. If you have pillaged some stuff from that KA-4006, I might hafta see if I can get one of the switch covers from you to make this 650 whole again. I probly shouldn't have bought it, but I figured I just got some Christmas money, I sold off all my extra gear, and I need a winter project, so what the hell. I'll find out soon enough how much work it needs...

Man! How'd I miss that little number???

Oh, I see... it's a 650!

I need to add that one to my search list!

Aaron the 8004 is sitting in the computer room waiting for you. Let me know what you need.

I'll have to take a listen when you get back from vacation. Have a great time.

Damn! Sweet Score! Can't wait to hear your comments about how it sounds. As much as I love my Accuphase, I think a 600 would make me seriously consider an addition to the family. Good job I have no money now! :)

Well, I don't really consider it a score, at least not yet and not at that price. We'll see when I get it. I took a chance, it may end up needing a lot of work and money poured into it. Even so, its well worth it IMO. A buddy of mine at work just bought a Model 600 off ebay, so I will at least have a whole, working unit to look at should I need to compare things.

And a fine club it is!

Agreed

Nice shot Aaron! (Read this full of envy :D )
I'm just afraid that finding spare levers for the 650 may not be that easy: if I'm not wrong, they should be bronze rather than silver like in a plain 600.
But well, for the price, you may get a silver switch and tan it with tea/coffee/chocolate/whatever_you_like :thmbsp:
Again, best compliments! (again with envy..)

regards,
Carlo
(still looking to enter "the club")

Well, the knobs are the same color as the 600, the brushed aluminum look, so I would think that the switches should be the same, fingers crossed. Gary, I'll send you a PM about what this amp needs and we can get together sometime and see if things will swap. Now I just need to find one of these to match it...

Sounds good.

If nothing else you could replace all the switches with the ones from the 8004. They both have 8. From the picture they sure look the same though.

Sweet score Aaron!

Just a little request;I was gonna buy a 600 to use as a preamp/poweramp for my DIY activated set-up.I was warned by someone who claimed to have experience with the 600 that the preamp section of the 600 was "HORRIBLE"(his words).
Would you care to post your experience of this amp when you get it?
Thanks, and best of luck with your restoration project.

Welcome to the Supremes.

Nothing to do with Diana Ross. :D
Mean, give us a lo-down of your impressions of the amp when you get it. :thmbsp:

Aaron - You keep this up and you'll never get that pair of NS-1000Ms that Krimney has listed in the AK classifieds. And he's out your way.
