Purchase Decision..

Hi all - long time lurker, first time post.

I've just inherited my grandmother's JVC Model 5550 and my dad's Pioneer PL-518 turntable. I have the opportunity to buy a pair of ADS L710 series II speakers (pristine condition) for $1100. I'd have to travel 2.5hr to pick them up. Given the trip and expensive price tag, I was also considering going the route of new (B-stock) Wharfedale Linton 85th anniversary Heritage speakers for $1300. The amp is rated at 60W per channel at 8ohm.

Curious as to what other's would do in this situation as I've been told that the JVC 5550 may not fully drive the Linton's. Regardless, it'd be much easier to not travel and buy something on which I'll have a warranty.

Appreciate any opinions and guidance!

Just to buy some speaker cable to wire up the AR-4ax that a friend donated to me (however, found out that one of the 2 speakers is shot)..

What is wrong with the speaker? It might be worth your time to try to fix it, if you haven't had any experience doing it. I know for me, it has been a real learning experience fixing speaker problems. I bought a pair of Polk Monitor 5s and found one bad. Not too much of a problem because they cost $15 for the pair. Bought some capacitors for the crossover and now they are daily drivers.

If you haven't had a lot of experience with the different brands, I would recommend buying cheap and finding what you like before spending the big bucks and getting over commited to something before knowing what is available. There are just so many possibilities when it comes to speakers.

Those AR 4xs your buddy gave you - did you do any checking of why one didn't work? The problem might be fairly easy to fix, or if not, singleton 4xs are not hard to find or afford. If it was actually only the tweeter that didn't work, the pot is probably the problem...
It is never too late to spend lots of money. I'd look carefully at the ARs - among other things, I think they are possibly the most aesthetically pleasing speaker ever made: something about the proportions of all the parts just seems entirely right. And they are nice sounding speakers.
