I have not bought a new tape deck in 40 years I have come accross various ones thru the years and I have an old one from 40 years ago I bought new. So what are the experience of others whats new and worth the cash or is it like all my tube amps stick with the old decks. your kick back would be appreciated.

What format deck will you be looking to buy? The biggest problem you are going to run into is there aren't really making these currently. A few exceptions but for the most part true.

I record a lot of cassette tapes off the radio. I follow certain radio shows, blues to be specific. I did not even think that they no long put anything out new anymore but that makes sense. Tapes are not always readily available. Nor are the head units for my car(s). Might have to go the so called vintage route.
Thanks,

Generally, there a no new, top quality cassette decks being made. Tascam still makes a couple, and these are pretty much it, for new stuff.

Instead of buying questionable quality new decks, most here, including myself, go the vintage route.

However, it can be tricky to find a good, fully serviced unit. Sellers often list units on 'that auction site" that they claim are ready to go, but mostly, they have taken them into a shop and they replaced a belt or 2, and maybe cleaned the tape path. There are often other worn parts that are not addressed.

If you are a subscriber, you can list a WTB post, and see what you get. Folks here are generally more honest in the condition of what they offer.

Unless you are desiring a top of the line unit, your outlay should be not more than $300ish. Recording off the radio is not too demanding on the recorder, so near top of the line is totally adequate.

I will post what I own right now it is an old Sherwood Deck I will put up the Model Number and maybe just keep this one in good condition it has a few flaws but noting major.

National Audio Company still sells type II cassettes. ( NAC 871 I think ) You might want to look at the Tascam Units. I believe that the model I have seen the most has a cd/tape in the same housing. They are available new.
