quality vintage receivers?

Got a very cold response. Like "what am I supposed to do with this dad. It won't fit in my pocket and where do I download the MP3's and where do I plug the earbuds". I went to a lot of trouble but the receivers stand dormant along with the speaker systems. I guess it is just a different generation. I know at my kids age I lived for my Yamaha System. My friends and I sat and listened...today it seems like it is music on the go and sound quality isn't an issue.
Again, I apologize and don't mean to sound negative but just thought my experience may be of some help. Maybe your kids will appreciate the quality of a good system....That would be great!

That was the exact response I got from my son when I made him the amp in my avitar. I thought, oh crap, all that time. It took about 15 minutes for him to warm up to it when I connected his mp3 player and xbox. The amp is now used in the morning when he's getting ready for school and every night without fail. You just never know how they will react.

Your response was more in line with what I got from my grandson. This Christmas I presented him with a Pioneer receiver, Sony and Pioneer tape and CD decks, a Realistic Lab 300 turntable, some vintage vinyl and a pair of JBL speakers. He was thrilled and has even bought some new vinyl pressings. I may have created another future member.
 
Sony is my vote I have a str 6800 and V7 that is beautiful and great sounding. Its amazing how nobody gives them there due. I actually think there better than Marantz if not equal. However its good for me due to the fact you can pick them up much cheaper than the over priced Marantz
 
I want to bring up the JVC brand. Overlooked by the "Marantz-Pioneer" fan boys, they were very nice sounding units.

After reading these posts I was reminded of loaning my daughter my SX-450 and how much it shocked her (in performance). Still kicking ass after so many years.

It's all relative. Good vintage equipment, vs hyped new? I'd take vintage. But good new is tough to compete with. Good is good, after all.

Going out on a limb, but I'd suggest RS receivers. Pretty sure many parts are obtainable, even if not from RS. They tend to be sleepers, i.e. still a bargain.
 
40-60 watts/channel into 8 ohms for me sweet spot on sound quality and adequate power. A happy medium. Pre 1973, I like the Sony, Sansui, Pioneer, Trio-Kenwood, the Marantz, McIntosh MAC series, HH Scott, and many more.
 
Have anyone arround here heard any ugly sounding Receiver or other gear from the seventies?
If gear from that age is faultless then it will sound surprisingly good!
 
Harman Kardon x30 series. The 430, and especially the 730 are the best I have ever heard, and I've own(ed) Pioneer, Marantz, Sony.

All receivers mentioned are all good. I like Pioneer early 70s like the SX 727s. This series has a nice tube like sound, which I find pleasing. My SA 9100 amp has this sound.. Have a later 70s receiver you might like. That's the Pioneer SX 850. More of a solid state sound. Build like a tank. Recommend these.

Your Marantz is on my recommend list. Have a 4270 that's awesome. Best sounding receiver I have had in the my livingroom. As much as a I like the 850, the 4270 beats it. My two cents. I am pleased with all three. They are all hooked up. As a added bonus, the Marantz also serves home theater.

Love my tube amps. You can see I have some pretty nifty ones, and recently added Fisher 30A mono blocks to the lineup. But right now I'm being blown away by my HK 730. I want my tubes to beat it handily, but I actually like the sound it produces through my Cornwalls more than any of my tube amps. I have to chalk it up to personal preference, but maybe the 40 watts of old school ss power is just the right match for the music I play. I don't know, but the reality for me is that this receiver is the best I have ever heard my system. And that's saying a lot.
