The purpose of the QS series 500/800/a was to provide a separate amplifier just for the rear channels as well as a synth/decoder. The receiver itself does not produce a quad signal. It is the material which you are playing. The QS 500 will decode QS material, but the synthesizer will be used when converting 2 channel stereo to 4 channel.
The QS-500 is a passive device in a way. Connect it as you would an equilizer. Tape out from the 5050 to the input on the QS and output on the QS to the tap input on the 5050. Then when you engage the tape on the 5050, the QS-500 now becomes the volume and balance for all four speakers (front on the 5050, and rear connected to the QS) If the 5050 has the 4ch- adapter in/out you can use that instead. If you want to use a discrete 4 channel device like a r2R or 8 track, then just connect it to the tape input on the QS-500.
If you like what you hear with the QS-500, consider a QS-800a. Better channel separation in the decoder, and beefier amp section

If you were only using discrete sources like a 4 channel R2R. However if you wanted to play anything encoded in CD-4, QS, SQ, RM, etc you would be out of luck.
The adapters were a neat idea for those who didn't want to spend the bucks on a quad receiver, but in the end, its better to just by a sansui QRX receiver than to fiddle with multiple receivers, adapters, etc.
