Rate YOUR Speakers You Own Right NOW.

Ok, I think we have a new benchmark here. My recently acquired and re-foamed Mirage 750 speakers have caused me to list my JBL L40 pair. Miles better than the JBL's? Definitely not. In fact the JBL's beat the Mirages in a couple of areas, especially in bass response. But the Mirage pair are just so musical and accurate, sometimes a bit too true as they show up flaws in certain pieces of music. Bottom line, their low-volume performance is incredible, and the overall sound is incredible. They also beat out a pair of EPI 100v I just acquired and re-foamed. Not that the EPI are lacking; they are not. The Mirages are just that good.

Still playing with the Axioms. They are very good, but can someone out there in AK-land shed light on why the surrounds that I think are original are attached to the tops of the thick gaskets, rather than sandwiched between the gaskets and the speaker frame like most other speakers? Increase of the voice coil throw? Baffling me.
My present set-up finds a pair of Energy PRO-22 in an A/B comparison daily with some '70s Audiotronix speakers from Toronto/Oakville. The latter have me stopped in my tracks. A well-built, unassuming, large (21" tall) bookshelf speaker from Glenn Electronics in Oakville (Ontario, Canada). They are just a simple two-way with small front port, but they make fabulous music. 8" woofer with pleated paper surrounds, plastic-grilled 3" tweeter, they appear to be nothing special. But they stand right up to the Energy PRO-22 speakers, which are excellent speakers in their own right. Apparently Glenn Electronics became Mitron and produced other speakers such as BSM and Laser. They just sound so good! They are backed up in the rear by a pair of JAMO Concert 70 and together they make great music. Weird that a cheap-to-purchase (thrift store) pair of speakers are finding a permanent place in my line-up. Just shows how great this hobby is!

Cizek Model 1
JBL L-19
Advent Prodigy Tower
A/D/S L-300C
Cerwin-Vega D-1
Bang & Olufsen Beolab 6000
Bang & Olufsen Beolab 4000
Fluance SXHTB
ADC 404
JBL 2600
Sony SS-U310
Panasonic SB-PM01

Infinity Compositions Overture 1 would be on this list but they have blown subwoofer amps. :(

I have three sets that are vying for number one status: Boston Acoustics A200s, Silverline Sonatina IIs, and my JBL L110s. They all sound d good in their own right, but they’re all different.

I liked the a150. Have a a40 right now

In my office I have two systems. Infinity’s I’ve had for several years. ADS bought last fall. After many months of listening the results are:

ADS L570/2
Infinity RSb

Right now the east coast speakers win hands down.

Chapman T-7
Acoustat Model X w/ Servo charge tube amps
Infinity RS5 (80's version)
Linaeum LFX
Hafler 200 (speakers, not the amp)

This is a harder thing than I thought! Unfortunately, I have some things running in 4 different parts of the house right now and switch things out quite a bit.. so this is more guess than science ;)

- KEF 103/4's (had this set refoamed, restored and love their sound and clarity and was even surprised by the bass after being redone)
- KEF Q70's (did side by side with these and the 103/4's above and they were good, but not quite as good)
- KEF 103/4's (second set, not redone. I want to do a side by side with the Q70's, but haven't been motivated enough to lug the 70s downstairs)

After this it's more of a muddle
- Boston Acoustics CR8's - in limbo, but really good, may swap them into bedroom to give them more time, don't have good stands so I'm not putting them into a good enough position to fairly evaluate, I think.
- Mission Leading Edge 700's - bedroom set, really a pleasure to listen to
- Kef Coda 8's - set up in my small office now, but probably not getting usage they deserve
- Mission 760i's - running as a second set in basement. Like these, but maybe not as much as the 700s
- Boston Acoustics A60's - didn't like these in the bedroom space, but may give them a bigger room and drive them a bit harder (just refoamed so maybe need some more play time) - may be giving these or the 760i's to my parents for their own set
- KEF Q50's - really nice, but not as good as the Q70s, AND one of the tweeters has a dent and gives me a buzz on rare occasions, may move up after I see if I can fix that problem - got them super cheap so not too worked up over the dent
- KEF C40's - sentimental speakers I've had since college, but in comparison with the new KEF's the Bass seems much more muddy and diffused.
- Boston Acoustics CR57's - at my business office and perfect for a small office space, surprised at how good I thought they were

Probably need to get some good stands and a subwoofer to be a bit more fair to some of the bookshelf speakers so they can be at their best.

Since I've pared things down I have...

1 - Magnepan 1.7i Main system, set up for solo listening. Imaging, soundstage, open and and detailed.

2 - Infinity RS-II Currently not in use (no room for them). In a good room, with big power, they can be special.

3 - KEF 104/2 Home Theater Mains - These little guys aren't far behind 1 and 2. I have a Kube, but find I like them better without it. That's what the sub-woofer is for;)

4 - Klipsch RP-600m Bedroom System

Honorable mentions (currently not in use):

AR-3a
Infinity RS-5b
ELAC B6.2
Music Hall Marimbas
Large Advents

The following is based on my opinion and it changes monthly depending on whats powering them
ADS L910...Just got them so Im in the honeymoon stage right now.
Stephens Trusonic AXA 206
KHorns
Tannoy 12 inch gold monitors
Cornwalls
Tannoy Devons
Chorus ii
JBL L100

1st (tie): Klipsch RB5 and B&W DM302. These are very different but both excellent.

2nd: Monitor Audio Radius 90. Incredible sound from such tiny boxes!

3rd: Minimus 7 (3 pairs)

I feel kinda inadequate here in terms of speaker quantity.

Grundig SM 3000 (bet no one else here even has a pair of these)
Braun L810 (Very close second)
KLH Model Five
AR-91
Grundig Box 1600b (a little weak in the bass)

Linaeum LT1000 - with new Dayton Audio RS225P-8A woofers, biamped with a miniDSP 2x4 HD active crossover.

It is a transmission line cabinet, and the bass is incredible. The tweeter covers down to 440Hz.

The TLS tweeter is in an open baffle, with the gray felt damping the back wave. Here's the in room response, measured with REW:

The two dips are floor reflection cancellations, that most speakers have. This response is set to a so-called "room curve" - flat between 200Hz and 1kHz, with a 1dB/octave rise below 200Hz, and a 0.5dB/octave drop above 1kHz. So, +3dB at 20Hz and -3dB at 20kHz - which is similar to a Harman Curve; which humans tend to prefer.

This speaker is frankly the best I have ever heard. It has clarity, and is open and transparent. Differences in recordings are very apparent - you listen for a while to a recording, and you think you have an idea about how the speaker sounds - and then you put on a different recording, and it sounds different. I have just finished recapping the Modulus preamp, and the ST-140 which is powering the tweeters. The Vidar for the woofers is less than a year old. The bass is outstanding - it has the speed and control and power that I could not imagine a speaker having - remember the amp has the crossover and EQ at it input, so it drives the woofer directly, with no passive crossover components. The stock crossover had an iron core choke, and when it was bypassed, I was shocked at how good the bass was.

Best Apples - DefTech BP 2002. Over 20 years old and still rocking.
Best Orange - Yamaha NS-690ii Uncolored studio sound that's about as accurate as one can get.
Best bananas crazy "shouldn't sound as good as it does, but with a sub will beat most anything" Hornshoppe's The Horn rear loaded folded horns.

1. RTR HPR-12 Magnums with the ESR-6 electrostatic tweeter/mid module - Makes the speakers much more revealing.
2. NTH 2.9 - somewhat power hungry compared to the RTR
3. Infinity Compositions Overture iii - an under rated Infinity. They were billed as home theater speakers, but do an admirable job in 2 channel stereo too.
4. NHT 1.5 with 2 of the NHT SW/1 and sub amps - a great combo for one of the funky shaped rooms in the house.
5. University Medallions (real nice with tubes)

Not as nice as many here (you all have such nice speakers!) In order of what i am enjoying right now as when i move amps/receivers around sometimes the favorites change

JBL S26ii - titanium tweeters that don't go harsh and bass is great.
Klipsch r51m- really loud dynamic and clear for their size with surprising bass.
Wharfedale Delta 70.3 seems quite rare but wow nice mellow sound
Kef Coda 7 - great bass -seems highly dependent on amp used and good for close up listening.
Boston Acoustics A40 - in garage but moving inside.
Energy EXL-15- use for movies but also great for music
Paradigm titan v1- just got for free and refoamed. Great bass, darker sound.
Paradigm titan v2- also just got for free and waiting to refoam- initial listen seems imaging better than v1 but waiting for refoam.

Hmmm...this may be a bit tricky, so I'm going to put it into different categories.

Floorstanding:

Well I only have two pairs, but I know that the larger pair can put out a bit more low-end, and has a super-tweet, so.
