On a new {to me} set of epi 100's I notice the dreaded rattle when the loudness switch is engaged...once off it is gone.I've examined the speaker for damage and find none, other than not useing the loudness any ideas what to do?My speakers {4311's} do not respond in this way.:sigh:

"Loudness" boosts both bass and treble frequencies by a certain amount of dbs ( remember +3dbs roughly translates as a doubling of perceived loudness ), and is supposed to be used only at lower listening levels to compensate for the human hearing´s lower sensivity at the audible frequency extremes at low levels.

If you turn your "Loudness" control "On" at higher listening levells you are probably overriding your speakers, and your woofer, for example, may be bottoming out, meaning the voice coil is actually working outside of its intended range, therefore causing the strange rattling you´re hearing.

Your JBLs can probably handle quite a lot more power, therefore the effect you describe with the EPIs doesn´t take place with them.

If the foam surrounds on the woofers are original, it might be time to refoam because they could be the victim of voice coil rub due to weak foam. Just my $.02 worth of nonsense for the day.

I would imagine if that was the case, then the rattle would be noticeable regardless of the "Loudness" button being "On" or "Off".:scratch2:

I think you got it right hi-fi nut, when the loudness is off no prob....these epi really suck the power after getting used to jbl's.I was listening to classical fm when this happened.
I'll retest with some bass lines from Silvertide, their drummer starts off the song 'I ain't comin home' with a wicked bass drum. Will report back. i

Thanks for the suggestions but I found the problem....the butyl surround has seperated from the speaker frame causing the flapping.I think I can re-install since it looks like nothing more than dried glue,no splits or cracks in the cone.I need your suggestion as to what glue to use,I have used speaker glue to mend cone tears sucessfully but this is rubber on metal bond, any ideas? If all works well will go ahead and do the twin. Thanks....

reglueing is only a stopgap. replacing or having the surrounds replaced is inevitable. i would try to do it on my terms.

phatster, Use "Indian Head Shellac" from any good autoparts store, let set for 24 hr's.
Make sure the gluing surfaces are clean and dry.

Pop or crack upon operating the switch?

No: when playing bass-intensive source material at upper echelon levels.

I'm thinking that I actually made Klipsch Cornwalls puke and I should back it off a bit...
