RCA console changer too fast.

In my 1964 RCA console, the RCA brand changer runs a tad too fast. At the 33 1/3 speed. I can tell because I have music training. Everything works fine on this changer, even the original cart! The idler roller cleaned up and has plenty of traction. The motor is free and smooth, and I don't see how there could be any speed adjustment. It has 4 ledges, representing the 4 speeds. I can't figure out anything to do to adjust the speed..

Its an annoying but common problem. You can not change the speed conveniently. The motor is synchronous and is governed by the 60 cycle line. This problem affects many old changers that use synchronous motors with stepped shafts and idler tyres. Apparently we were not as sensitive to these problems in those days as now..

Changers as a rule run a bit too fast to handle not slowing down with a full stack of records on them. And speed accuracy on most console changers is not trained ear/musician accurate either. It got better if you bought a Dual, Garrard, or ELAC/Miracord or bought a high end synchronous motor manual turntable like the AR, Empire, Rek-O-Kut Rondine or Rondine II, Lenco, or broadcast turntables (the Rek-O-Kut Rondine and Rondine II with Ashland motors are broadcast equipment)
