Hey guys,

I used the search function, but nothing came back. A guy locally is selling a RCA Victor 7-HF-4 Orthophonic High Fidelity phono console, and I was wondering if anyone has any info on it, and if it is worth looking at.

The "Orthophonic" was used in some of the earliest RCA/Victor record players. It was first used, I think, for their acoustic record player. The needle vibrated a diaphragm, which sent the sound down the hollow tone arm. The tone arm was connected to channels in the bottom section which formed a very convoluted folded horn. There was no electrical amplification.

And it was so successful when it was introduced that RCA plastered "Orthophonic" on anything they sold for 35 years after the first Crendenzas etc were introduced in 1925... The one you have is a fairly garden variety home "hifi" console from I would guess the early 1960's. Not the greatest quality for the most part, but the amplification (if non solid state) might be fun to pull out and play with...

:tresbon:I beg to differ on the quality. You can't beat the amp in this model and my Billie Holiday records never sounded sweeter!
