I recieved my replacement mcd 201. It was made in December 2006. Some of the changes I noticed was the transport had less noise, The track changes on cds are smoother. no skiping issues. I can no longer hear the Dacs switching on and off between tracks. The disc tray operates smoother. This player replaced the one I perchased in march. I think this player will perform well. I am using this player with a external B.C. 24-192 dac with great results. I was wondering what dac the mcd 201 uses? 24-96, 24-192 or multibit? The mcd 201 dac sounds real close to my 24-192 dac. Thanks.

Thanks ron c. for the info on the mcd 201 dac. The sound from the mcd 201 is easy on the ears, very smooth not harsh sounding. The external dac I was using with the mcd 201 is a belcanto dac2 which also has a laid back smooth sound in my system. Has anyone compared the mcd 201 dac with other external dacs, I have seen a thread where a mcd 201 was used as a transport with the mda 1000. My system: MCD-201, MA6500, B&W 804s. Thanks.
 
I've used the MCD201 as a CDP, then as a transport with the MDA as an outboard DAC. The 201 has a nice and smooth internal dac but the MDA is in a league of its own. You get more resolution and better focus, bigger soundstage, deeper bass and highs that are more extended yet smooth and fatigue free. Of course the MDA uses 8 top of the line 24 bit Burr-Brown DACs in fully balanced configuration and upsamples from 16 to 24 bit, 768kHz. The result is an analog smooth playback with higher resolution that is as musical as digital gets.:thmbsp:

PHC1, have you had the opportunity to compare these three options:

[1] MCD201 to MDA1000 to an amplifier
[2] MCD1000 to MDA1000 to an amplifier
[3] MVPxxx to MDA1000 to an amplifier

I am wondering how close an MVPxxx [as a CD transport] compares to options [1] and [2].

Hi Matt,

Am only able to answer questions 2 & 3 as I have that experience.

1. MCD/MDA1000 direct to amplifier (both MC501's & MC2000) - The best there is.:music:

2. MVP841/MDA1000 direct to amplifier (MC501's & MC2000) - Very, very smooth performance. :thmbsp:

mcd 201

MC201 ( $3K ) uses DAC chip Cirrus Logic CS4398, same as marantz DV9600 does ( < $2K ). :tears:

MDA should be better DAC for sure. :yes:
 
Having the MDA in the system really closes the gap in performance between any player. Be it MCD201, MVP or MCD, functioning as a transport, you have to be really familiar with your system and music you are listening to even notice the slight but audible difference. I don't have an MVP but I did compare the 201 vs MCD, there is a difference, the MCD has deeper more articulate bass and sounds a little more hi-fi in terms of overall sound, a little more air, a little more depth to the soundstage. I think the main difference is the AES/EBU output of the MCD transport vs digital coax of the other players as well as the more solid chassis and probably a much higher quality laser. Like I said, the difference is not huge but it is there, is it worth the extra $$$? To me it is, to others, it may or may not.

I sit 8ft from my mcd 201 and slightly hear the transport. This is not a probelm as I do not have the mcd 201 in a cabinet, it sits on the 4th shelf of my 5 shelf equipment rack under my turntable. My other transport had a noticable high pictched motor noise, as well as tracking problems. I did not like the noise bettween tracks on discs. It was a mcd 201 made in March 2006. My current replacement mcd 201 was made December 2006, and meets the European lead free solder requirement on the transport and unit . The transport motor is much quieter, I think the transport is still made by Raymedia? but with a quieter motor, 80% quieter, and up to date firmware, for better disc tracking- less transport noise. I realy enjoy my music now with out all that transport noise bettween tracks on discs. Audition one made in December 2006 to present, you should hear the difference in less transport noise. Most of the older mcd 201s never had transport noise or tracking problems, I just hapened to buy one that did. Some problems can be fixed with firmware updates. Thanks to Mcintosh for the replament unit, and exelent support and customer service!

Hey Matt,

I've compared the MVP861 to the MDA1000 to the Amp vs the the MCD 1000 to the MDA 1000 to the Amp and I agree with Jerry. So save, scrape, and steal and wait. It's hard but think of it like a date with a hot chick and scoring. Blue balls for a while then a home run.
