Recommendation needed for portable, battery and AC powered AM/FM radio

My wife has a pet sitting and house sitting business that takes her away from home on a regular basis.

She would like (me) to find her a portable AM/FM radio with a battery and AC option so she can listen to her favorite stations without having to mess with her clients often elaborate and expensive stereo systems.

I've checked a number of the large electronics retailers but they appear to offer only portable battery-powered radios.

She doesn't want the hassle of rechargeable batteries.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Hit the RS and look at some ot the Eton radios. There are the windups and the S350DL allows for both AA and D cells as well as AC. Also, what about one of the MP3/FM radio players? A single AA battery lasts in excess of 8 hours and she can load what she likes.

+1 for both the Superadio and the CCrane Radio. I have both, actually several different version SRs. Both have excellent audio and tuning abilities. Both run "endlessly" on D batteries.
If digital tuning and presets are important, the CCrane has everything but a remote. The Superadio is more old school, vintage-style, but you can get 4 of them for the price of a CC. They show up frequently at TS for less than $10. Note... the current version is branded RCA and quality is reported to vary from one unit to another. There is a SR forum at Yahoo Groups.

Another worthy contender is the Tivoli Audio PAL, if it is still available.
Very nice little radio; albeit with an unusual 'form factor'.

EDIT: oops. The PAL has rechargeable batteries on board, but it's still a dang fine little radio, so I won't recant my suggestion (just dilute it a little).

Why not just use the old fashioned portable stereo/boom boxes? They all have plug in/battery options.

Good idea -- I wondered the same. Her response: Too big, bulky. :dunno:

Thanks to all for ideas and suggestions. I now need to review the options with her. :D

The CC Radio is a very good portable radio, with an unusually good sounding speaker (for an AM/FM Radio), and an especially sensitive AM Antenna built-in. The original version is somewhat more robust than the newer shortwave version. The only think that I don't like about this model is the inability to punch-in the frequency that you are listening too. This is not a big deal on on AM & FM. But on shortwave, that would not make me happy.

A number of other Sangean models are very nice too, but none of the other models have a speaker that sounds as good as the CC Radio. Most of the others feature a keypad though, which is a feature that I miss on the CC Radio.

My recommendation is the AC/DC powered Sony ICF-38. For $25 it has excellent reception, both AM and FM, a tuning LED, tone swich, nice large speaker for it's size, and great sound. In addition it has a nice durable handle, and durable antenna as well. The battery comparment stores the AC cord (no wall wart), and it will run 30-40 hours on 4 AA batteries. It's also more compact compared to the GE Super radio III (which I have) just as good as sound, particuliarly on AM talk (though not quite as loud) and runs much longer on batteries. Alos, it doesn't drift on AM like the Super Radio
The build quality is excellent, better than the super radio at half the price. And the tuning LEd makes it a breeze to tune.:thmbsp: Hard to believe it's only $25!
Sony clearly put a lot of thought into this inexpensive radio, and it shows
