Record clamp

RIP 1961-2018
Or weight to be precise. I recently got a cartridge shipped to me by AK'er Cableguy in this cool little tin. After mounting the cart up, I got the idea to make a weight out of the tin (it's the perfect size). I drilled a spindle sized hole in the bottom being very careful to get it centered exactly (so it won't eccentric when it spins). Then I glued a cap off a small spray bottle inside, and lined it with foam (actually Bill had already put the foam in).:thmbsp: After the glue dried, I added lead shot until it felt about right. I think it's cool as hell, and only cost me a few old shotgun shells.:smoke:

jaymanaa, I think that is very cool, even more so because you diy'd it :thmbsp:

If a guy doesn't have shotgun shells hanging around, what else would you recommend using or if I were to get shells what size shot should I buy?

What's the 'appropriate weight for one of these record clamps/weight, anyway? :scratch2:

Cool idea. Looks like a fine clamp/weight. Off topic, let me be the first to commend the cleanliness of that LP....one could eat supper off of it (though I won't, I promise !!)

Great idea! I do have some extra #00 laying about, would that be too big? Probably get more lead in with #7 or something... ?

The stuff I had was number 8 but I think anything would work. The can is a promo from Kwik Kopy if you have one in your area. Not sure on the weight, but I'd guess 8 or 10 OZs maybe.:scratch2: You can see it push the record down nice and flat. I do keep my records pretty clean since I found a Nitty Gritty (all oak) in a antique store for 10 dollars. When I bought it, the lady asked me what it was. Seems her and the other employess had been stumped.

re: the 10 dollar nitty gritty: i officially hate you! ;) i sooooo want an RCM, but i dont have enough time right now to build one. or the cash to buy one. :(

I got a big bottle of bb's for my bb rifle to teach the kids, They should work fine too and there real cheap at wal mart. Think I will try it as soom as i find a can.
How heavy should it be?

Walmart in most areas sells lead shot. You could also use fishing weights ($) or even Sand.

The tin looks a LOT like a 35mm Bulk film can that 100' rolls of film comes in. I have a few most still full of film. Might be another source of the can.

Nifty idea! I did have a thought regarding a source of lead...a tire shop! Balancing weights can't be re-used, since the spring clip loses tension and could fly off. There's usually a 5 gallon pail of old weights sitting next to the balancer. Some melting may be involved to use them...I'm still thinking. (Danger! Brain engaged!)
