wet cleaning

I typically wet clean every record the first time I play it. Sometimes twice if it had hemp seeds in the crease of the foldout or cigarette smell.
Then I re-sleeve it in a paper/polyethylene sleeve to keep it clean. After that I find that only the carbon brush is required for replaying.
I never leave a record on the platter. When it's over I put it back in the sleeve to prevent it from collecting dust.
Records that prove damaged or worn on the first play get a piece of white tape on the spine of the jacket so I'll know not to run them on an expensive stylus for fear of damaging the diamond. If they're unplayable they get black tape on the spine so I don't try them again.

Regarding stylus cleaning, I've become less concerned with it since I've been scrying my styli with a microscope. I find that a clean record leaves only a small amount of loose dry material at worst. This comes off with a few passes of the carbon fiber record brush, leaving the diamond and cantilever spotless. More 'thorough' cleaning accomplishes nothing because there's nothing left to clean.
For a really dirty stylus (someone else's) I use an Audio-Technica brush or LAST carbon fiber bristle brush and their fluid. It's safe for all stylus adhesives and leaves the diamond and cantilever perfectly clean under the 'scope.
