Hello: I'm not sure if I'm in the right place here????????? But I would like to ask if anyone knows how to refinish some speaker cabinets that are walnut veneered. They are old with some water stains and a few small scratches and dirty. These look like they were oiled walnut finished. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to refinish my old infinity 3000's and Altec Lansing 401's. Thanks in advance! Sgt.B. :scratch2:

Yes, lots of us have done that. There are lots of ways to go about it, depending on how much needs to be done and how far you want to take it.
Often, dirt can be removed with some simple wood cleaning products. Water stains, if they do not come off with cleaning, can be removed using products like Howard's Restore-A-Finish and some 000 or 0000 steel wool pads. Very easy to fix up.
Scratches can be more difficult, and a lot depends on how far you want to go. I have stripped and sanded walnut veneer speaker cabinets down to bare wood and then refinished them with Tung Oil, which took out most of the deep scratches at the same time. However, it's a bit labor-intensive, and if you sand, you run the risk of sanding through the veneer, which can be a problem.
In worst-case situations, some have actually put new wood veneer on their speaker cabinets, which is again another level of effort, expense, and required skills, but can be done.
So it's really up to you. There are many ways to approach the issue.

If they were just oiled a light sand 200 grit max then again with 300 wipe with tack cloth and re-oil. Water stains usualy go deep most wont come out. Different oils will give a different finnish. I like tung oil.

Hand sand only. I love watco Danish oil or varathane wiping stain. You may consider reveneer as needed. Pretty easy. 4-5 coats of Danish oil and that finish will be hard. Use the oil and applied oooo steel wool will give a really smooth finish

Rather varathane dark walnut gel stain. I like the gel stain as it covers a lot of imperfections and deep scratches you can't sand out without going too deep. I used to try to get ever mark off the cabs but decided they are vintage and these are character marks ... Each cab has a story to tell.... If you use the gel stain finish with watco satin spray varnish in the can. Looks pro.
