Rega P3 or Technics 1200 mk II?

I have a shot at a brand new 1200 or a used P3, both for around the same price: $400 delivered to my door. The Rega has the 200 tonearm, and has had the wiring upgrades, and had RCA outputs installed on the back so you can use the interconnect of your own choosing.

Which one would you choose, and why????

I love Rega tt's but 400$ for the planar 2 with the old 200 arm is a bit steep ! That table is late 70's, early 80's. It has a lot of mileage on it. The most I would pay for it is no more than 200$ in perfect condition!

OTOH, the 1200 mkII is new. I haven't heard one in a long time so I can't say where they stand sonically.

Hope this helps

Iirc, I sold them (Planar 2) for around 400$ (canadian) brand new with a cartridge installed!

I need to correct the posting. The comparison is Rega P3 and the Technics. My appologies.

Ok so I'm partial to the Technics 1200 cuz I have one (MK5)

BUT, one of the MAIN reasons why I went this route was because it was NEW, like you say yours would be. To me, if it has moving parts and motors, I really do not want the wear and tear to deal with. I keep plenty busy with cleaning machine, stylus cleaner, stylus/tonearm adjustments, leveling/placement, plastic sleeves for the vinyl, carbon brush, etc., -- really don't want possibly something else in the mix, know what I mean? (Not saying there's no good used TT's, but I just feel less stress from possible mechanical wear that may be difficult to identify)

I was actually considering a used Rega 3 myself versus the Technics when I was shopping :smoke: -- I guess also I was finding a lot of info, articles, mods, dealers, etc., on the Technics than the Rega, so I guess I felt it may be easier to fix it when the time comes.
