I always liked the sound of the old Shure cartridges and the M97HE was close to the top of the line but I broke the stylus.

What are good inexpensive replacements available?

The old Shure M 97is a great sound cartridge.
There are several replacement stylus available from various online sellers.
I got the SAS from JICO to replace my Shure M97 recently.

I recently received a repacement stylus for a Technics MM cartridge from JICO. Mine is the SAS model, $97 + $10 shipping from Japan. Stylus is at least as good as the original. As to a good/inexpensive replacement stylus I'd highly recommend the JICO SAS for your M97HE. You didn't mention any budget but if the original M97HE stylus was still available my guess it would be more expensive than the JICO. For the small amount of money you might save going with a cheaper/inferior stylus than the M97HE I think you would be disappointed with the sound after having the HE stylus.

Those are great replacements.
Locally these sell Pfanstiel 4771-DE, I wonder if those would work well, they are very inexpensive.

the direct replacement stylus for the M97xE is the N97xE from Shure. I just replaced mine under warranty with no cost to me. Call your nearest Shure distributor

The N97xE is the latest model and I believe that stylus does not fit the old M97 HE.
I could either buy the new cartridge for less than $80 or get a JICO SAS for around $120 and presume the sound is better for the M97 HE.

You could even buy the JICO HE for $59 and presume the sound would be better. If you polled owners of the original M97 E or HE vs the newer M97xE version, most would agree that the original sounded better. And of course, the HE stylus will extract more detail than the E. The SAS takes it a step beyond.

I own M97HE. Anyone did side by side comparison between old M97HE and newer M97XE?

Also anyone replaced the HE needle with this one?

Yes i did and the older Shure sounded so much better. but an interesting thing I found was when i replaced the stylus in the XE with an N97ED stylus the M97XE sounded so much better........ I've always thought that the problem with the way the 97XE sounds is due to the stylus..........

No it does fit but there are other styluses out there that sound so much better in that body.

G'day all. Stanton: Yes I think you're quite correct in that the supplied M97xE stylus badly lets down the whole cartridge. At least one can 'compensate' for its deficiences by upping the resistive loading somewhat.

That improves the general tonal balance a lot, but the Jico SAS stylus is still clearly a superior stylus in terms of (greatly) improved retreived detail and overall resolution. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Yes to both questions as I own both cartridges and I have that very same HE stylus for my Shure M97HE. LP Gear had told me that HE stylus was made by Jico. It sounds great and just like the original BUT the brush is not a damping brush like the original Shure brush. It just hangs there. I find the original M97HE cartridge to be superior to the M97XE cartridge as it doesn't have those maddening rolled off highs. I've never tried an SAS stylus on it like others have so I don't know if the rolled off highs are due to the stylus but I doubt it.

If its made by Jico then that seals the deal for me.
What is the purpose of the brush, it doesn't appear to actually touch the record surface?

For tracking purposes and the Shure brush actually helped with static but the Jico one makes no difference, although it will still help when you're playing a record that may have a slight warp.

There are three positions for the brush. When it’s rotated fully up, it won’t touch the record, and will have no effect. When it’s rotated down to the next position, it aids in tracking warped records, damps the arm/cartridge resonance and raises the resonant frequency, conducts any static on the record surface to earth via the carbon fibre of the brush, cleans up dust, and reduces damage to the stylus caused by impact with the record surface if the tonearm gets dropped. There is a third position, reached by rotating the brush further – it becomes a stylus guard.

However, as the Jico one doesn't appear to be damped properly, there's probably no point in using it, apart from cleaning the record. It certainly won't have the effect of the genuine Shure brush.
