restoring teac a6300...oil sealed motors? slow fordward/rewind?

My dad has owned his Teac A-6300 since it was brand new. It's spent a lot of it's life in the basement, and I know my dad...he doesn't service anything.

It works pretty well, however, I told him I would like to take it off of his hands and make it work a lot better. There are a few issues:

reverse (play speed or fast rewind) works when it wants to. If I hit the reverse play button, it will click, and then it will play in the standard forward direction. A FEW times I got it to play in the reserve direction AND rewind, but it's rare.

the only other problem I have found thus far is sluggish fast forward (and rewind when I can actually get it to do so). The play speed is good....

SO.....I lubed the capstan motor because it had oiling tubes...but the other two motors do not....how do you oil the sealed motors? I want to do this in hopes that it might help my slow fast forward/rewind issue...

also I was thinking that lubricating some of the other components that the tape moves along...however, radio shack does not carry head cleaner and lubricant anymore...any home remedies for making the tape guiders more slippery?

not sure about the other stuff, but your local drug stores will have 91 to 99% isopropyl alcohol and using it on q-tips will get those heads and guides nice and clean.
and they do really need to be clean. dirty heads/guides can gum up the transport and slow and/or even stop the tape and reels from moving.

there may be other issues in play here also.

good luck!

edit-maybe hold off from lubing other parts until you get some knowledgable advice on the subject.
more than one person, one just recently here at AK, iirc, has ruined components by using the wrong material on them or too much, etc...

There is no way to lube the reel motors aside from complete dissassembly of them. They are supposed to be sealed for life. As you have been told, clean all the transport (heads, guides and rollers. Also you will probably have to clean and lube the mechanism that moved the pinch roller up and down, they are famous for getting sticky over time. What kind of tape are you running on the machine? There are some that have a sticky shed condition that will bring even the most robust machine to it's knees. (Ampex is one of the worst offenders)

I cleaned the heads, guides, and rollers with alcohol like several people suggested...i lubed the capstan motor with the oil tube...and I tried to shoot some oil into the shafts of the reel motors as suggested by the reelprosoundguys.com.

what should I cleaned and lube the pinch roller mechanism with?

maxell, tdk, scotch, memorex, etc....no ampex

If your deck is weak on wind/rewind, it could be the motor run capacitors that are faulty - typical symptom is weak motor (tends to run hot also )

unless you have a esr meter, only way is by replacement :)

I haven't the schematic for your model, they're probably 3.9 + 0.9uF/250v
(identical to those in a A-4300)
Where is a good question , i don't know (i'm not Us based)

I see....I have a car where I had to replace the Engine Computer capacitors because they were the old style electrolyte caps that leak...is it the same case with these old reel to reels?

OUCH!!
That was the wrong advice. If you don't see an oiling tube, the motor is sealed. Shooting oil into the shafts created futher problems.
You need to do voltage checks on the deck to isolate each problem. That's the only way to gain reliable results.

P.S. Don't use IPA on the pinch roller or any rubber parts in the deck.
