Retro Stereo- Question about your avatar

In the picture I see you have 2 spec-4 amps in the rack. Are you using them to power 4 speakers with leads comming from the spec-1 preamp? I have never seen any spec gear in person and your picture makes me wonder what all the spec-1 preamp can do.

I've longed to own spec gear since my sophomore year in highschool. the graduating class of 1980 gave as their class gift a spec 1 and 2 spec 4's plus dual turntables, a cassette deck and an equilizer and 4 cerwin vega speakers so that the school could run its own dances and not have to pay DJ's....they forgot about the need for media to play for the dance...

anyway, the setup was a bit underpowered to fill a full gymnasium with sound for a dance so they raffled all that gear off to raise money and went with a professional Peavey system...I spent about $30 at the time buying tickets to get that rack but I think a little tom foolery was on as a local resturant owner who only bought 1 ticket won the gear...oh, also the owner was personal friends with the pricipal...hmmmmmm

anyway, it is rock solid gear that most any of us would give your first born child to posess (that is those of us still in line to get some)

thats my story, doesn't answer your question, just thought i'd share.

That's what's so great about the Pioneer SPEC 1 preamps, they can do just about anything you can think of. I can run speaker wires from the amp to the SPEC 1 and hook up 2 pairs of speakers that way. What you are looking at in my avatar is 2 amps being run into the SPEC 1 via RCA wires for a bi-amping operation. In other words, I am running 2 amps into one pair of speakers.

Does the spec 1 have two sets of preouts or are you using Y splitters?

Yes, it does have two sets of pre outs. I'm telling you, this preamp does everything you want it to, and then some...

Hey Retro,
Where in MN are you at? Can I invite myself over sometime and give it a listen? Never heard any Spec equipment.
Thanks.

You're welcome any time! I'm 60 miles straight south of Minneapolis on interstate 35.

As a matter of fact, I was looking for any interest in a little Minnesota/Iowa/Wisconsin get-together on September 23rd with this thread here in the "Events and Happenings" forum:

But, like I said above, you're welcome anytime, just send me a PM and we can make arrangements.

Hey, that's cool. I think I will plan on coming down on the 23rd of Sept, and have a good old time.
Great idea and thanks much.

THanks retro. I may need to pick one of these up to play with. I am sure it will go over well spending $400 on something just to play.

Sigh - I have been yearning for a set of SPECs since they were new (and I was a teen), and have finally got my eyes on a SPEC1/4/TX9500 combo I might go for. And now you are telling me that what I really need is two sets of SPECs?

You would be correct, I've got a Spec 1 and two Spec 2's and if I could find spares for the Spec 1 and 2 as back ups, reasonably priced I'd jump on them!

Maybe then after having all units including back ups rebuilt by EW then I'd be done, maybe :scratch2:

Well, I tend to have several pairs of speakers that are NOT very efficient, so I run two amps into them. If all I had was efficient speakers, like Klipsch, Polk Monitors, or HPM 100's, I certainly wouldn't need to run two amps into them. The speakers I have that are NOT very efficient, are AR-9s (pictured in my avatar), Vandersteen 2Cs, and A/D/S 1290s, and I bi-amp all of those.
