(On old computer memory boards you can use the term "American fault finding : Sit down and wait for maximum smoke ! How? Grab the 5Volt 30Amp supply .... We knew the cupper traces could handle 10 Amps each, but the ceramic packages would act like popcorn - Hehe.. )
I use this method to locate the ONE out of 50 tantalum bypass capacitors in old tektronics scopes. Find the shorted rail, apply low voltage at high amps and wait for the pop. Saves a huge amount of time.
My friend almost died when I showed him this, but it works a treat.
Of course, I already KNOW it's a Tantalum, so I feel confident to do it.
The Tek 485 scopes needed that a lot.
