Looks like that is not available in the US. I would give it a try, looks like it could sound good.

It definitely looks like they at least put some effort into the speakers. I'd bet that they sound pretty good. I'd love to get my hands on a set of ribbon tweeters to try out in my system.

HDCD...it's probably a better system than a lot of the crap us North Americans are force fed. Wish we could get half the stuff the Japanees and Europeans can get.

At work, I use an Aiwa mini-system from probably the late 1980's. The speakers are made of this plastic and clip onto the side of the receiver, forming a boombox. The speakers also appear to have ribbon tweeters... kinda weird. Also, no, they don't sound particularly good. But better than the Sony system we had before, which only had one speaker, and the balance knob had been ripped out, so who knows how much signal was going to the one speaker.

The ribbon 'on top' made me think of Cylons.

With botl studio monitors there seems to be a trend for using ribbon highs, perhaps also in botl HiFi?

Sanyo only sells beamers in Europe afain, this EX unit looks like it might be nice...

I have a pair of Prodipe Ribbon 5s... they actually sound really really decent for what I paid for them ($230 shipped).

It's not quite the same thing, but I have Optimus LX4 with the Linaeum Tweeter hooked to a SONY Minisystem in the kitchen. It sounds pretty good. There's a lot of bang for the buck to gotten by tossing the speaks that come with these systems and subbing a small quality speaker for them.

Ditto. With separate components and exotic-looking speakers, they were probably aiming for good sound quality. Whether or not they suceeded remains to be heard. Don't sleep on 'em. I have a Philips DVD Micro Theatre MCD708/37 in my bedroom that has a separate pre-amp/tuner with built-in DVD player and separate 50 wpc amplifier that came with a pair of 2-way 5" woofer/neodymium ribbon tweeter speakers having 5-way binding posts and clad in real rosewood that sound damn good. A very handsome system. I purchased it for $99 brand new during a blowout sale at J&R Music World and was VERY happy with my purchase.

Philips use ribbon tweeters in some of their mini systems too, and from the couple I've heard, they're pretty good considering the price.

However, the lower end Philips ones have a cheapo mylar dome behind a grille designed to look like a ribbon.

Those speakers look great, but isn't that a Planar tweeter? Ribbons are my favorite tweeter.

I've looked at them in various stores. They appear to be PLANARS not ribbons. There is a difference.

AFAIK true ribbons are much more expensive than planars and rarely if ever put into BPC.

I believe this was one of those systems:

My ex-wife has one of these and sounds much better than comparable units. The speakers are heavy and they look like having ribbon tweeters, but perhaps these are planar ones. I don't know, but the speakers sound good.

There has long been a series of "midi" components like that, with ribbon (planar?) driver on top and woofer below. Most of them had active/servo amps built-in, with the rest of the system (tuner, CD player, preamp) in the middle components. They came in various versions over the years, from basic black plastic housings up to a deluxe version that had beautiful woodgrain veneer with a lacquer-like topcoat on the speakers. These look to me like just the latest models in that series.

I've seen a couple dozen sets of them over the years in the used-audio wholesale places here. They are hardly commonplace, but also not ultra-rare. They sell for moderately good prices in the shops here, mostly for the speakers, rather than the components themselves. In fact, sometimes they throw away the components and sell only the speakers, which are the best parts of the systems. I thought for a while about collecting a bunch of the speakers and re-building them into line array DIY speakers, but decided to pursue the AMT line arrays, instead.
