Ruark Talisman thoughts and review

I just picked up these Talisman's from jjohnson. I've had enough time with them to throw out some initial thoughts.
I believe these are the first version.

First, they're really nice looking speakers. Very British for sure and obviously solid build quality (heck, they survived a car accident just a few minutes from Jeff's house when my van was rear ended at a light!). They're smaller than I expected even though I had read all the specs. I like that since they're going in my quite small (~12' x14') listening room.
I purchased these to replace my Def Tech BP2000's as they were just too much in that room. They're now in a quasi- home theater setup in our basement. I had been running a pair of Epicure 11's in that system and I really love those speakers. I like that the Ruark's can be biwired/biamped since I really wanted to play around with running my Eicos into the high end and my Parasound SS amp into the lows, since I've never played with that concept.

I first plugged them up with just the Eico HF 20's (running as mono blocks). In that setup the Ruarks were really good, but they lacked just the tiniest bit on the low end. The bass was *there*, and it was detailed, but with no oomph. The little Epicures definitely had them beat in that department.
They were also not as good at presenting the 3 dimensional midrange that I love in my Monitor Audio RX8's, but I wouldn't expect them to.
I actually gave thought that maybe they wouldn't be around all that long.
But then I decided to play with the "biamp".

Now we're talking.
Whole different sound. It gives the bass that little extra bit that it needed, and it's overall more 3 dimensional. With this setup these speakers could be fine in a much larger room, but they're really excellent in my space.

I think I've going to be able to comfortably pare down to one system in the mancave now and I'm pretty excited about that. Before I liked having the tube system and the SS system since each had their merits, but I really feel like this is the best of both worlds. I think these Ruarks will be around for a while.

I picked up a pair of Talismans at a local pawn shop. I really like them, although I haven't been able to get enough bottom end from them. I don't like boomy bass, but I wonder if placement may have something to do with it.

The fella I bought mine from had the same issue. His were in a largish room.
Mine are in a 12x14 room and the bass is plentiful and well balanced.
I think these are certainly best-suited for smaller rooms.

Oddly enough, I had to replace one of my woofers as the rubber surround was torn a bit. I found a near perfect match in a Seas driver, except with a polypropylene cone and near dead on specs. The surprise is that it delivers a fuller bottom end! I am replacing both, but wanted to compare them and there is a big difference. I'm almost wondering if there was something wrong with the originals.

Sorry, I don't have the specs on them. At one point I was able to find something via google, but I don't have that handy right now. If you spend some time googling, there's a magazine review I came across that had everything listed. It was a pain to find!

Picking up this thread ...
I got the speakers from Wes yesterday.
They are marked Talisman II on the back.
I'm trying to find a brochure, magazine review, spec sheet or similar, but the fun is in playing them!
I hooked them up via a Jolida 502BRC (60w/ch tube) integrated amp and played some tracks with known low end bass
(Firth of Fifth - Genesis - Selling England by the Pound; Thanks to You - Boz Scaggs - Dig; Ballad - YoYo Ma & Claude Bolling) -
the lowest notes due tend to roll off, but bass is tight and firm otherwise, and I have not loaded the cabinets with sand, or installed the spikes.
Haven't done Daft Punk or similar yet ... soon!

They will not knock down our custom JBLs 3ways with 15in woofers, but for under 10% of what the JBLs would go for, they are darned impressive!

So far I've tried a pretty good variety of music so far (Icarus - The Winter Consort - Road; Pantangle - numerous tracks; Highwaymen; Ray Charles; War - Cisco Kid and World is a Ghetto; Hilliard Ensemble - Lassous; Jan Garbarek - Runes; Happy Rhodes - Equipose; number of tracks from earlier Miles Davis) they do play very nicely in our upstairs room.

Currently playing YoYo Ma - Appalachia Waltz

A note about loading the cavity with sand from a review of the similar RuarkTemplars ... http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/1295ruark/

"The cabinet is divided into two compartments so that the enclosure can be damped/mass-loaded by adding sand or lead shot. Access is gained via a removable plastic bung on the rear wall, which means you have to load the sand (which I used) or shot through a one-inch opening. To make the procedure even more entertaining, Ruark's manual instructs you to take care "not to over-damp the speakers by adding too much weight. We suggest you initially half-fill the compartment and listen to the results." Great. Half-fill a compartment with an unspecified volume, and then listen to the results?

I called Ruark importer Michael Zeugin and whined to him about the vagueness of it all. "Oh, you've only got this problem because you didn't buy them from one of our dealers," he explained. "They know that the proper amount of sand is a little over one pound. In fact, many of them have one-pound Zip-lock bags filled with dry sand to give customers to take home when they purchase the Templars. That also makes filling the compartments a snap—all you do is snip off one corner of the bag and pour it down the open bung."

Another part of that review said:

"Ruark may be an unfamiliar name to many US audiophiles, but Brian O'Rourke has been designing loudspeakers for 25 years—first at Diesis and, since 1986, in partnership with son Alan at Ruark. The elder O'Rourke (Ruark is the old Celtic name from which O'Rourke derives) is a master cabinetmaker and member of the Guild of Master Craftsman; this craftsmanship permeates the construction of all Ruark speakers. Alan brings to the firm his background as a precision engineer, not to mention his musical passion as a professional bassist. "

I must admit - they are gorgeous cabinets. Plus the sound is very appealing! Pity they are no longer imported -
and it sounds like they are not the company they used to be ...
