Rum aficionados?

I would like to begin exploring better quality dark rums that I can sip straight on ice. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find a liquor store in my metro area that carries anything better than the typical. But the guy I regularly buy from tells me he can order me probably anything.

To date, I have tried the standard Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Sailor Jerry, Private Stock, Pyrat and Zaya. Zaya has become my standard go-to for Cube Libre, and Pyrat tasted the least sweet of the bunch straight but didn't seem very smooth to me.

Any recommendations on a sipping rum? The above all run around $15-$30US but I'm willing to double or triple the top end of that for a good sipper.

I am not a serious drinker of fine liquor, so for me, smoothness and flavor are key as I don't want to mix at that price point.

Thanks in advance.

Not terribly dark and it's been a long time since I had any, but really liked Hana Bay Rum from Hawaii. Watch out for high proof rums!

I always keep a bottle of Mount Gay XO and Cruzan Single Barrel around here as SOP.
For white rum (mixed drinks mostly) I keep bottles of Angostura Reserva and Plantation 3 star on hand.

Bumba is a favorite of mine. It has hints of vanilla and is very smooth for sipping.

I bought some Cuban rum, Santiago de Cuba, at the cruise ship dock store in Mexico. It was $12 a bottle and quite surprisingly good.

we grow a lot of sugarcane in Louisiana and there are at least three distilleries I am aware of. Bayou Rum, New Orleans Distillery, and Donner-Peltier Distillers in Thibodaux. I have tried all and they are OK, but not my favorites.

Great suggestions, All! Thank you for taking the time to respond!

@MaxxVolume - I've heard of MG but never tried it. It's on the list. No added sugar, too. Nice!
@jimbofish - never heard of Papa's but it's on the list. Any particular variety? They have several listed.
@ConradH - I will check out Hana Bay. I think I've seen it on local shelves. Yeah, high-proof rums are a mystery to me....seems like they are trying to appeal to bourbon or scotch drinkers.
@xero-D-hero - Thanks! Wow, great suggestions! I do white rum too but prefer aged, blended and spiced (like my women...lol).
@El Rubio - I will put Bumba on the list! Thanks!

I wonder if my guy can order sampler size bottles of most / all of the above? He did this for me a few years ago when I wanted to compare tequilas.

I was gifted a bottle of Barbancourt 15yr rum. It is made from sugar cane juice and not molasses. It has a nice rum flavor, but kind of pricey. It’s not on my shopping list, but not bad either.

Also, Myer's Dark.

I just bought some Kirkland brand spiced rum from Costco. Seems OK to me, but I'm no expert.

This. The consensus seems to be that it's probably a private label Cruzan product. It has a fairly distinct vanilla note, not in an unpleasant way, but it's definitely a dominant flavor.
For the price it is excellent, and even ignoring the price it is quite good.

Most of Costco's Kirkland brand products are made by someone else (i.e. Nutella). They vary the recipe slightly from the name brand from what I understand.

Someone else told me to try Kirkland rum, so I may have to renew my membership. I do like Cruzan for its vanilla note (reminds me of Private Stock).
